So what white?

So what white?

2009-10-19 by DaSwans

I'm feeling like it's time to restore her paint to it's original beauty. I want to do things to improve #857 that don't cost a lot of money right now. Considering that at some point, my Mellotron was painted with a brush with white latex house paint, I'm sure I won't have trouble bettering it's appearance.

But what is the proper white? There are spots where I think I see the original color. But I can't tell if it's the effect of a 30 year old film of nicotine or if someone spilled the bongwater on it too many times.

So, does anyone know the right shade? Refrigerator white? Ivory? Gray white? Cream? Light almond? I believe it's supposed to be satin. But am I wrong? Is it gloss? Any brand of paint (preferably from a can) that is preferred?

Any help is appreciated.

Sure do it's called "black" it's a darker shade of white.
Makes them look more distinct (ask Fripp).
Sorry but I couldn't resist.

Thanks Tony. I thought the Crim trons were white. At least they are in the pictures from the booklet of the 73-74 live box set.

Any other advice on glossy/satin and white/off-white? Somebody out there must know, right?

My pleasure I am sure.
The stock paint color is an off white/cream but obviously I'm not the guy with your answer, sorry!
Ask Martin or John as when my was restored it was repainted in black.
Glad you can take a joke (despite the fact that mine has been black since about 2 days after I bought it in 1975) and my new one will be too.
Preferences are a good thing.
Best,
Tony

Re: So what white?

That's beautiful, Frank. Is white satin an original color?

I'll be using cans. I've done a lot of paint work on my Triumph Spitfire (engine bay, suspension parts (no body work)), so I'm confident I can get a good finish with cans, 800 grit sandpaper (wet), polishing compound, etc.

Do you know if they were originally ivory or white? I can't really go by old pictures in Genesis books because they don't really tell the truth. My gut tells me it's not a refrigerator white and probably closer to ivory. But what shade? Probably lighter than almond, right.

Who know? Maybe I'll just do white like the one in your picture. It looks great!

Satin is a finish, like flat or semi-gloss. There are a zillion shades of
white, so I'd just pick one, paint a cheek block and see if you like it. I
like Krylon in cans (very good nozzles), but I like epoxy paint (in cans,
sold by Top Flite) even better. I get it at the local hobby shop. It leaves a
very hard finish. Substitute the Krylon nozzle if you can.

I am going to paint the blue Mellotron with a gun... It is going to be some
shade of white again. Spray cans are fine for the inside of the cabinet,
but if you are going to put effort into cleaning up the outside and fixing
the dents, crapped up corners and edges, then for me, a gun is the way to
go. It is faster and you have more control. Spray cans are way too uneven
when painting large flat surfaces

Great info. That's what I'm looking for. I do have a gun and compressor but I think my gun is broken. The last time I tried using it on some doors, nothing came out. You're points about using a gun over using cans will be considered. Perhaps it's time to buy a new gun and do this thing right.

Paint prep is a major "must do" to keep a finish lasting. When I painted #510 the cabinet was completely worked over, so all those decades later it was still in great shape. Using my experience from custom painting bikes, helmets etc worked out wonderfully.
My point is use a good gun, Devilbiss is my gun of choice and you might be able to rent one, or at least a Binks.
Good luck and take your time!

Or to give it that genuine Rick Wakeman feel, paint it with a flame
thrower. It's very quick and easy, but do it outdoors. The fumes and
overspray are not good indoors.

Hi all-
If you research automobile paint, the old Ford color "Wimbledon White" is very close, but borders on the tan side, and a tad darker than the original 'Tron cream white paint. I tested a can of spray touch-up paint to come to this conclusion.
One idea that could help is to remove a cheek block and check the paint on the side. It may be untouched (no tobacco smoke haze), and a matching computer at the paint store may be able to scan & duplicate it.

Yes, but I would recommend polishing it with auto body polishing compound
first, to get the oxidation and grime out of the paint.

When I saw them at the Waterbury Palace opening for Edgar Winter(!) sometime in the distant past, they had 2 white M400's. Fripp played one and Mel Collins player the other.

Or perhaps it's time to clean the gun?
I've never seen nor used a gun I could not clean.
If you have the appropriate thinner in the pot and tightly cover the end cap of the gun, pull the trigger you will back wash the device. That's my standard way of cleaning a working gun and it's the last step in the process.
Unless you've used some type of epoxy the chances are good the gun will work again.
The DeVilbiss I mentioned is an expensive gun, so they are not disposable items to me.
If you have some $29.95 unit, then I might toss it and start with a new tool.

Great info. That's what I'm looking for. I do have a gun and compressor but I think my gun is broken. The last time I tried using it on some doors, nothing came out. You're points about using a gun over using cans will be considered. Perhaps it's time to buy a new gun and do this thing right.

A very good point, Frank.
This discussion thread gets me to wondering: Why did Streetly finish the original 400s in white in the first place? Was it simply to make them stand out from the other instruments on a stage? Any thoughts, Martin?

Yes, but I would recommend polishing it with auto body polishing compound first, to get the oxidation and grime out of the paint.

The guy who used to paint them had once worked in a refrigerator
factory. It was either white or avocado as far as he was concerned.
Streetly wisely insisted on white. They did test one 400 in avocado. I
believe Frankie Stickle has it in his kitchen.

I've been wondering that for a long time.
True a pristine white Mellotron looking stunning, but again "preferences" black looks spooky, and that's why I bought one and waisted no time getting it black (like the rest of my gear)! The way so many people abuse their instruments, black hides imperfections nicely, and is easy to touch up.
When John and Martin repainted mine (in black, 2006) it's as striking as my paint job or better.
So when the new unit arrives it too will be black.
The white issue is understandable to me, and if I were to go that way I'd go for a bright white.
I remember Pavlov's Dog (2 M400s) looking great on stage and they were bright white.

While waiting for Martin's reply, I'm going to guess... I think that it was
because white was cheap and easy to get. Also, white was easy to match.

I'll weigh in on this in Martin's stead. I was told by Mellotronics
back in 1972 that they were painting them white because that colour
picked up stage lighting so well.

Yes, we have it. It makes a delightful table for our polished aluminum tea
service. We also have some lovely plates that are made of some kind of
clear, space-age plastic. When company come to stay the night we serve up a
nice round of Thomas' English Muffins (original, of course) and some nice
English Breakfast tea in the morning and we all sit around the Mellotron while
I play "In the Wake of Poseidon."
