Siberian Khatru

2009-11-24 by robertsonics

No doubt this has been asked before... does anyone know for sure what sounds were used for the first minute or so? There's the initial 4 stabs, which may or may not be the same as that for the next minute. Is it just distorted strings? Are there horns and/or choir in there as well. It's a very unique sound which I'm sure is partly a result of processing or being over-driven, but I'm really curious as to what actual mellotron sounds it originates from.

It sounds to me like MkII Accordian.

I've always thought it was brass as well.

I'm thinking MkII church orgran. (Is that the same as the "woods organ" peoples?)

No, it's a Lowrey with a Leslie.

Station 6: Italian Accordion and Church Organ. Listen to sound file on
Ken Leonard's website (MONEYPIT Mar 2004) for a live (although poorly played)
demonstration played on MkII #134 (Pindertron). Mike Pinder has confirmed
this as being used in stage and studio.

Oh yeah...forgot about the church organ.

Q: did Pinder ever use the French accordian?

My understanding was that he preferred the Greek Accordion. When stretched
it was quite accommodating.

Mike said that he used it on "For My Lady". I have yet to corroborate
that on #134 as I have done with "Peak Hour". While respecting Mike, he has
made some contradictory statements in various interviews, e.g., in Ross
Mehan's recently released documentary, Mike stated that he used only Strings,
Brass, Flute, and Church Organ (likely true only on stage - I have no
personal recollection of hearing anything other than those sounds in concert),
while the recordings reveal that he used Italian Accordion, Vibes, Tenor Sax
(quite often) & half-speed Brass (although the latter, I believe, was not
an available sound and likely studio trickery).

Almost forgot -- Mehan's documentary has a couple of stills of Mellotron
MkII #134 plus a mention in the credits.
Thanks, Ross!
