The Mellotron Group

Hey all!
     I have a client who needs to PURCHASE a
mellotron.  I realize this could be grasping at straws
but he's on a schedule and wants the thing by January
1st.  I suggested a new one, but his budget is not as
such.  He's willing to pay a fair price for a decent
M400.  If you have any leads, please let me know.  I
know, I know, everybody on the list is looking for
one, but if there's one out there, somebody can make a
quick sale.
Thanks for not laughing, although I won't fault you if

That's exactly why people are paying $5100 for them these days.  There 
aren't any M400s at "fair" prices any more...

Sure there are. I'll sell you one for way less than that. Way, way less.  And 
it is a good machine. It nedds no parts and it plays well.
 
The guy that bought #1562 from me stole it for $5,500.00. Compared to the  
one that just sold on eBay, it should have gone for $6,500.00. But it didn't.  
However, I got a fair price for it and it got the best home it could possibly  
have. It is in a very active recording studio in New York and it will be  
recorded by major (and lesser known) bands. The two most important  considerations 
for me were that its new owner would take good care of it and  that it would 
be played. It may never see another live audience, but it will be  recorded 
and heard. That is all I could ask for.

Swinging off the previous topic, what would you sell your Mellotron for? As
I play and collect Hammond B3 Organs, I thought that I would never let any
of my B3's go for any price. But I have purchased 6 and sold 3 already, with
no regret. Maybe its because B3's are more common than trons, but I don't
think I would sell my M400 for anything.

Thanks John I do appreciate them, but I pay a high price for these possessions, MS and type 2 diabetes, both incurable. I defy these problems to alter my life

All to often it seems that the phrase "fair price" is shorthand for "what I 
think I should have to pay" instead of "what the free market decides is the 
going rate even though I don't want to spend that much."

When I was young I had a '72 Dino, a 59 XK-150 Fixed Head Jag, 9 Porsches  
and a Pantera. Now I have a 99 Expedition with 165k miles on it, a Escape with  
30k miles on it and a scratch built Harley. I don't give a shit about cars  
anymore. Can't drive more than one at a time. I'd sell the Expedition, but I  
probably couldn't give it away. I had a 2003 Jag S type with 400 HP. Sold it and 
 bought the Escape. The neighbors are still scratching their heads over that  
one.
 
I can fit 4 M-400s in the Expedition and have done so. It also holds 3  
Dobermans just fine. They drool and shed all over the inside. Dogs were never  
allowed in the Jag. That's why it had to go. I like dogs better than cars. I  like 
Mellotrons better than cars too.
 
I wish I had kept the Dino and the 59 XK-150. They'd be worth a whole lot  
now.
 
The old Jag was the best chick magnet ever. Like the Dino, I did a complete  
restoration on it. I'd drive into Georgetown (DC) and young women would run 
into  the street and ask for rides. No one knows how to build testosterone into 
cars  more than the British and the Italians.
 
Working on #386... the Phallotron. Bigger, bolder and harder than hell to  
get around to.

I used to feel that way, but after having so many pass through my hands in  
the last few years, I don't so much anymore. I've had mixed feelings about  
letting two Trons go, however. 1562 was MY Mellotron. I loved it and it was  
played live in many, many shows, and it was recorded many times. #600 (Lazarus)  
was also very hard to part with. What made it better for me was that both went  
to great homes. A guy on this list bought #600 before it was even close to  
being finished. He lives nearby, and knowing that a talented musician who  gave 
a shit was buying it made it all the more worthwhile to make it as good as  I 
could. I would have liked to have kept that one too but then I would have 
been  less motivated to move on. I know where several more are... just waiting 
for  me.
 
I'm waiting for my M-4000.

I have an eight year old white MkVI - #019.  It does take up a lot of
space in my kitchen.

A new white MkVI is $6,800 or £ 3,387 (with flight case & one frame)

I would expect that the market value of my 8 year old MkVI would be a
fair bit lower than the price of a new one.  There was a MkVI that
sold on ebay this year (with one frame and no flight case).  Does
anyone recall what it sold for?

I believe it sold for $64.50 plus a bag of Chips Ahoy cookies and a set of Mattel Fanner 50s.

I often wish I'd bought a modular synth in the 80's when people were giving  
them away. Average price now is 10,000 quid upwards.
 
I can't complain as I bought my first M400 for 150 quid at about the same  
time.
 
Conversely the Fairlight was 30,000 quid then and about 2,500 now...

Well, I'd like one but they are about as rare as hen's teeth round here. 
Good lord, if you look on Ebay UK sometimes you can find Hammond spinets 
going for \ufffd400, whereas in the US I have heard stories about them being 
thrown onto rubbish tips.
