Documentary glaring omission

Documentary glaring omission

2010-01-04 by MAinPsych@aol.com

Happy New Year, y'all.

I, too, received my copy of Mellodrama a couple of days ago. My surprise
is that so far no one has mentioned the most glaring omission, which is the
current status of Streetly and its role in the tron's resurgence in
popularity and use, as well as ignoring the development of the M4000/5000.
Contrarily, they seem to have been unfairly treated as a footnote in Mellotron
history. I intend on asking Dianna about this during the upcoming NAMM
showing.

Frank,

That's exactly what I was referring to in my own cryptic way. I posted my concerns on the Mellodrama Facebook group and Dianna did respond.

I haven't received my copy yet, but I can already imagine being
disappointed. How do you make a documentary about Mellotrons without including the
development of the M4000/5000? Unless, of course, M&J wouldn't let them....

Just to clarify, we chose not to be in the documentary. We were
developing the M4000 when the filming was in progress and the workshop was littered
with prototypes and, without sounding too pretentious, industrial secrets.
We thought it better to bow out even though Dianna seemed a pleasant
enough person with good intentions.

I can't see why anyone here would be interested in buying the DVD at
all. Surely you know it all already, and being a film it won't be as
informative as a book and is bound to have 'rough factual edges' on it
that will just irritate you.

'Blah blah....Harry Chamberlin...blah blah....matched playback
heads....blah blah....Fransen....blah blah....Graham Bond....blah
blah....Strawberry Fields....blah blah....liquidation blunder....blah
blah....popular resurgence....'

What else is there to actually say about a musical instrument? Or can I
corner the market in making a film called 'I Like The Kazoo'?

You can try.

Good luck and keep us informed as to your progress. I'd suggest lots of CG and blue cat-like aliens. That'll bring in the rubes for sure... McDonalds can hand out a free OFFICIAL kazoo with every Happy Meal.

Well, I actually bought and read, "Mellotron: The Machine and the
Musicians that Revolutionised Rock." I found it to be a disappointment on many level
s. So I'm fully prepared to be disappointed again. Oh, did I mention
irritating? The book was certainly that.

Frank, when you see Dianna, be sure to introduce yourself as Canadian
mystery writer, Rick Blechta.

Who wrote this masterpiece?
Not sounding (no pun) appealing or informative at all.

Then perhaps you could pass yourself off as Canadian superstar musician
Chris Dale.

You mustn't tell her who you really are or she might feel overwhelmed. You
did, after all, create the Mellotron Book.

I think there's a motorized smiling cardboard cut out of me somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up. Frank - if you're a ventriloquist and can "throw your voice" - that just might do the trick! :)
As for my flat appearance, you can say that all Canadians look like that due to our willingless to be steamrolled by our government! :)

Mellodrama...

2010-01-12 by Daniel Swanson

I just finished watching the whole thing and the bonus footage. My
expectations were very low. Maybe that's why I liked it. I thought it
was well done and fun. No major complaints. Of course I'd like more. A
specific chapter on the actual sounds, more Tony Banks, more in depth
information, more Tony Banks, more archive footage of our favorite
Mellotronists like maybe... Tony Banks.

But as a movie about Mellotrons, which let's face it, how much can you
really say about it? It was good. I won't watch it everyday, but I
will watch it again. The whole dvd package is very nice and well done
and compliments my disease nicely. It did make me feel both proud and
foolish, though. I feel like a Trekie or comic book nerd.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Mellodrama...

2010-02-14 by Chris Dale

I finally had the chance to watch the Mellodrama DVD.

Although most of us here will not find much we didn't already know, I thought it was quite entertaining for it's length.

Markus has a lot of intelligent information to share and Streetly's absence is certainly felt.

Some minor errors trivia-wise regarding Led Zeppelin using a MK II and all 4 Beatles buying them upon release (only Lennon and B. Epstein did) but still it gives a fairly accurate picture.

Overall it's a great companion piece to Frank's book and Nick Awde9;s book, and I'd certainly recommend it for the layman who wants a starting point to learn about these machines and the music made with them.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
