Here Chris Lawley plays Supper's Ready by himself... All parts except the
vocals. It took him 8 months to make this video. He is an incredible
musician and a really nice guy. Check it out. It's in 3 parts

Doesn't anyone compose original music anymore?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a major fan of Genesis and a lot of other bands I hear the group "covering", but to me music is a personal expression. I also never play the same music twice as I improvise 100% of the time.
Not at all dismissing your efforts, in fact kudos to you all, I just express MY feeling regardless of how much I admire the work of others. I just don't care to copy them up to my maximun ability.
Oh well to each their own.

I also never play the same music twice as I improvise 100% of the time.

Blyme, that's amazing!

By the way, neither Mike or myself copied anybody. Our submissions were based purely an exercise in sound textures. For me, it was something I always wanted to do. A one off, which I did a couple of years ago.
Personally, I wouldn't want to spend what time I have left on this planet covering someone else's material, when I have so many more songs still unwritten.
But I think this guy who's done the Suppers Ready thing deserves credit for a pretty decent job. The only issue I have is that I find it difficult getting around the accent of the guy singing!
As you say, each to his own.

Chris is in a band. They do original material as well as Genesis and other
covers. I just thought it was a pretty good job. It's one thing to learn
the guitar parts, or the keyboard parts or to be able to play along on the
Casio, but to learn EVERY part and to be proficient on every instrument
screams talent. Look around for his other work.

By the way... Andy, whatever music you crank out, I look forward to
hearing.

Martin... I just want to hear you sing.

Chris is in a band. They do original material as well as Genesis and other covers. I just thought it was a pretty good job. It's one thing to learn the guitar parts, or the keyboard parts or to be able to play along on the Casio, but to learn EVERY part and to be proficient on every instrument screams talent. Look around for his other work.

Tony -

I used to feel like that too, but I knew there was an 'expressive gap' in some things which would allow me to play music you knew in my own way. The thing is that I tended to choose things which we capable of that type of expression. Rock music is pretty rote stuff and particularly so those tunes no one would even dream of covering. It will always reek of the original.

Having said that, this cover sounded pretty slavish. If you want an edifice to Why I Hate Genesis, look no further than Suppers Ready.

Here Chris Lawley plays Supper's Ready by himself... All parts except the
vocals. It took him 8 months to make this video. He is an incredible
musician and a really nice guy. Check it out. It's in 3 parts

I've listened repeatedly and I can hear no Slavic influence at all. Please
explain.

Having said that, this cover sounded pretty slavish. If you want an

So now we know what Mike listens to, to unwind.

Martin Smith told me that in Britain it's considered a compliment. (or
something like that)

Doesn't anyone compose original music anymore?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a major fan of Genesis and a lot of other bands I hear the group "covering", but to me music is a personal expression. I also never play the same music twice as I improvise 100% of the time.
Not at all dismissing your efforts, in fact kudos to you all, I just express MY feeling regardless of how much I admire the work of others. I just don't care to copy them up to my maximun ability.
Oh well to each their own.

Depending on how you pronounce that last word, it could have considerably more relevance.

A warning

We all thought Gary Schwarz's work on mellotrons was shoddy but we have an M400 in that has been customised by Frank Levi, another Sound Sales delinquent. This chap has made a capstan wiper from the little brass label retainer you find on old filing cabinet doors, fitted strengthening brackets made out of an alloy akin to Plasticine, made a spacer to keep the belt straight out of an old pencil rubber rather than solve the issue, used cavity wall filler to keep the connections on the SMS2 which he mounted so they would fall off and poured solder onto joints from a crucible rather than using a soldering iron. So our friends in the US, if your mellington bears the sticker of Frank Levi, Keyboard service technician, be very much afraid. God almighty!

fan () so I an anxious to see examples of such creative workmanship.

For the benefit of the American audience, what Martin is referring to here is a pencil *eraser*, not what you may have originally thought.
