Crackly output

Crackly output

2006-06-13 by Josh

Hi all,

I just bought a Yamaha CS5. There are a few crackly pots, but they're
improving with use. What isn't improving with use is a random
crackling in the output signal. I thought originally it might be the
keys, but I even hear it when I turn up "initial level" in the amp
section so that you hear sound without a key-press.

Does anyone have an idea what the root of the trouble might be? I've
cleaned the output jack with contact cleaner, tried plugging it into
several speakers/amp systems, etc... all with the same result.

The person I bought it from didn't hear the crackles, so I'm wondering
if something happened during transport or if he just didn't notice.

Cheers,
-Josh

any chance of it being a some cold solder joint on the output jack or some such simple thing?

at least it's an easy fix.

Hi again,

I opened the synth today, and discovered a sizeable ball of lint/hair
etc right behind the output jack. Removed this and had a good clean
in there, and checked the solder joints: they appear fine. I thought
this had fixed the problem, as I plugged it in before putting it back
together and it sounded fine. Then once I'd got it all back together
and returned to its place I had the crackling again. I'm just going
to plug it in again back on the workbench and see what happens. It'd
be a real head-scratcher if it was something near the synth causing
the trouble.

Cheers,
-Josh
