Finally got this one working! I bought an untested clone board on ebay (AUD $210), which was a risk I might admit. Turns out that Q2, Q4 and Q5 were original components with a different pin-out. Rather than bend pins, i inserted them on the underside of the board, to flip pins 2&3. Now it's up and running perfectly, and I could complete the calibration!! Given
