A reversed battery will not damage anything (since the diode that replaces a resistor (R40, I think) will be reverse-biased and the battery will act like it is not in the circuit. If you can measure 2.5 to 3 volts on the RAM IC (pins 18 and 9) then the battery is OK. I would suspect a bad RAM IC if the battery is installed correctly.
