Some Issues

Some Issues

2014-11-26 by nick.oring@gmail.com

Hey everyone! Having some frustrating issues I can't seem to track, so figured I'd ask here :)

I'll go in chronological order of what's been going on and what I've done.

- Bought the Polysix with the battery replaced, but traces weren't pretty.

- Only things that worked were volume, bend, arp section, and then poly/unison/hold.

- MG LED starting slow on power-up -> constant on

- Repaired the traces and replaced the closest electrolytic and 74LS08.

- Same behavior with the controls from above, but now the patch select, save, etc. was working. MG LED still behaving strangely

- Purchased the clone 367, all new IC's, but salvaged the ROM, thermistor, and Q3 (5-pin transistor?)

- Same original behavior with the patch memory not working again and most controls not functioning.

- Tried calibration procedure, getting correct voltage and was able to jumper with a 56k resistor, adjusted VR1 to get all LED's lit, but once I removed the resistor, program 1 & 5 are only lit (no bank).

- Replaced the 2 4051's on the control panel boards with no change.

I think that about sums it up! I made the two corrections to the 367 clone, but I haven't changed the one capacitor to 10pf. I don't know if this might be causing some of the problems, but it was originally problematic, so not sure.

Any help would be awesome :) Thanks so much!

Oh forgot one thing, OCCASIONALLY it seems like the controls will work for a second or two. Twice I've been able to engage the effects, but then couldn't turn them off, even after setting the switch to off. And once I got the cutoff to do something.

Have you done pin to pin continuity for these items? Pay special attention to anything going through the connectors off of the board. I'm assuming that you've used the original factory connectors. The corrosion from the battery leakage can travel into the connectors and cause all sorts of strange issues.

I will go back over the connectors. I have once, but there are so many, so another run can't hurt. Also, the ROM PIC did have some leakage on pins 39 and 40, but it's only on the bottom of the legs, seems like continuity tests perfect at the top of the leg where it meets the chip body. Not sure if this is something to worry about, but figured I would mention it.

Thanks!

Continuity is checking out on all connectors. One thing I did just notice, when I turn the cutoff high, it scrolls through presets 5-8. so like 7 - 10 o'clock make those light.

I did upload some scope captures to the files section a while back with captions. These might help if someone is using a scope to troubleshoot the front panel scanning.

I seem to recall someone on this list was looking for the small off-white trimpotsused on the KLM-366 board recently. If you are still interested, I
now have a whole board full of them and would be happy to mail you a few
for free.

Actually, the board that I bought came with 6 of the SSM2056 env gen chips
and 5 of the SSM2044 filter chips. I have tested the 2056's in my PolySix andthey are fine. I will test the SSM2044 chips maybe tonight or tomorrow. Ifanyone needs one of these for replacement, or as a spare, please contact me.They are not free, but will be less than recent ebay pricing.

No, no, no! "Mensch" means the salt of the Earth, a true gentleman and a scholar, that one person for whom Diogenes searched, etc. Suffice it to say that it's a compliment of the highest order. And as long as I have you all here, I'll wish everyone a truly happy and prosperous holiday season!Dave Garfield
