<< I will list these serial numbers..... >>
ok, then. according to the installation notes I have on expanding a
2000/2002, two kits were available. one had just the ram-board, the other
included a new floppy drive because the following machines were
factory-fitted with SD drives (and I'm quoting SCI's own literature here):
1 through 1013
1015
1020
1021
1023
1024
1035
1036
1039
1041
1043
1048
1052
1056
1065
1066
1067
1070
my 2000 (the poorly one) is pretty old and is nr1858, so I suspect that most
of the units listed above have been retired by now. incidentally, we do this
thing on the mellotron list where everyone signs off with their serial
number; it's a bit trekky but has been useful in identifying how many
machines have survived and also some of the support issues.
you can find out if the unit is expanded or not (without taking the lid off)
by doing this:
switch "preset" off. select "delete" ("sample" and "preset8" should be lit)
and rotate the parameter dial to "AL". press "execute"; this will delete
everything. now select "size" ("sample"/"preset3") and see how high the
parameter knob will let you go. 128 is unexpanded, +56 means 256 and is an
expanded unit. *it will already have been fitted with a DD drive and v3
software at least*.
by way of confirmation, if you select "copy/append" ("sample" & "load" both
lit) and are only able to select 1-16 (and not 1P-12P or 1M-8M or 9M-GM) then
the unit is v2.1 and not expanded.
v3, however, does work in an unexpanded machine, and adds the following
features:
save/compare/load control data only (i.e. you don't need to keep resaving the
sample data if all you've done is tweak the patches a bit). you have to hit
execute and then hold down preset pretty smartly, as I recall.
mod wheel xfade between keyboard maps.
lfo's can be inverted. (more useful than it sounds)
global stack control.
improved arpeg features- midi clocking, aux footswitch drives latch, on/off
stored with preset.
(2002 only) key mapping extended to 88 notes.
preset and map copy functions.
I'm still looking for the notes on the + kit which I remember now also has
the notes for v4.x with the support for the individual outs (the + kit is a
bunch of jacks on a pcb; you have to drill the holes yourself, and cut some
track on the voice board. not for the faint-hearted. I did my 2002+ and was
very nervous). v4.x also has the crossfade looping which, if you haven't
heard it in action, is amazing. it still works better than modern emu's and
the like.
more soon.
