P2000: Softsynth and SoundForge

P2000: Softsynth and SoundForge

2003-06-25 by timothyconrardy

Hi all

Just had the most amazing discovery. I was able to find a Atari
program called Softsynth v 2.1 by digidesign( made in 1988)It is
a "libed" version. This program turns the P2000 into a 32 partial
additive synth with lots of great features on making original sounds.
It also has the ability to export SD ( Sound Design format)
files.Worked like a charm, but you have to have both MIDI IN and OUT
connected to the P2000 for it to communicate. You also have
to "clear" a sample on the P2000 manually as it knows if a sample is
already in the location you want to send it to.

I also did a google search looking for any .SD files( samples) Could
not find any. However I did find out that Sound Forge can convert
wave to SD. Since I have Sound Forge, I tried it..and it works!! What
a discovery! Now I can work on samples in wave format on the PC, and
convert it to SD, then upload it to the P2000!!

However, now I am having trouble creating a preset from the actual
samples. I think someone answered me on this, but how do any of you
create a sample ? I have the Operation Summery ( OS)available on the
file section, but I think what we need is a clear step by step
process on creating a sample and saving it as a preset. Even a copy
and paste from the OS would be OK, but it would help newbies as well
( like me:-)

BTW: I wonder if it would be OK to have this Atari version on our
file section for our own use? Probably not. It would work under Steem
( http://tamw.atari-users.net/steem.htm) on a PC.

There is also Sound Designer on the ST that works, as well as on the
Mac. The Sound Designer II file type is a bit different though.
That's when they went to stereo files and a bunch of other little cool
things. I think even Turbo Synth made it to the ST at one point. I
don't remember though. Works pretty much the same way for sample
dumps. Alchemy is a great app on the Mac for sample dumps, but it is
pretty old and wont run on OSX.

Hello,
if you want more or can't find SOFTSYNTH by Digidesign, you can run AVALON
from Steinberg (1989?) :
http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/jul99/articles/retrosteinberg.htm

Avalon 2.0 supports a wide variety of samplers, with dedicated MIDI sample
dump drivers supplied for the Akai S700, S900, S1000 and S1100, the Casio
FZ1/2, the Dynacord ADS and ADD, the Emu Emax and Emax II, the Ensoniq EPS,
the Prophet 2000, the Roland S50, S330, S550 and S770 and the Yamaha TX16W.
And, if that isn't enough for you, there is also the 'MMA Standard' driver,
which is a kind of generic MIDI sample dump driver that should work with
just about any sampler. Not only that, but there are also SCSI drivers for
the Akai S1000 and S1100 and the Dynacord ADS and ADD.
There are also synthesis functions....
