Prophet 2000 mods or enhancements?

Prophet 2000 mods or enhancements?

2004-01-06 by j.g.

Whats up, I just bought a used Prophet 2000 a couple days ago.

I used to own a Prophet 2002 rack sampler & currently own a Studio
440 as well.

I am just getting familiar with it & getting to know it...
So far I REALLY LIKE IT.
I am very happy with this beast, it sounds great, I love the lo-fi,
old school sounds, filtering, arpreggiator, etc...
This thing kicks ass (so did the price, even though mine was beat to
hell).

I am gonna be rebuilding mine, it's a little beat up.
Since that will require some disassembly, I figured this would be a
could time to perform any modifications/enhancements - if any exist.

So, are there any worthwhile P2K Mods or enhancements that anyone
knows about?

To start, I was gonna see about replacing some of the LED's with Blue
LED's, at least the ones on far right (to match the blue keyads).
Maybe have the top shell refinished (custom) as well, hmmm... but
then gotta figure out how to get the Sequential logo silkscreened
back on.

So yeah anyhow, was just curious.

I bought mine to use it as a Midi-Controller (for my Paia Fatman) and
to be my 12bit sample grit'ifier, I also have an MPC 3000 & SP1200.
MPC is my main machine, but I like to ocassionaly wash my samples
thru a 12 bit machine to toughen them up, I really liked the sound of
my Studio 440 (moreso than the SP1200) but using the 440 is sometimes
a pain & it's a finnicky box, I kind of want to leave it alone & not
risk shortening it's life.
The rack Prophet 2002 I had was cool, but I just found it hard to
operate & without a good keyboard controller it was kinda lame.

So far the Prophet 2000 keyboard seems like the perfect blend of
worlds, great sample engine, ease of use, all kinds of filtering
goodies & it's tank tough.

Ok, I'll stop here...

don't know of any mods that are possible besides the "official" ones- I have
the schemos and usually modify everything I use somehow or other, but my p2k
was perfect how it was. my 2k2 came unaltered but I added the separate outputs
kit and some extra ram. this latter moved into the 2k when I got it, but sadly
a few years ago the keyboard controller chip packed up and so I had to retire
it. it's one of the chips that WC can't get any more of... so the ram is back
in the 2k2.
if yours is working, look after it and be careful with it. I wish mine was
still useable :-(
I may even strip it and use the analogue chips (all curtis, vcf and vca) in a
synth project. damn shame.

Yeah so far the only thing I can see myself doing is
physical/aesthetic type enhancements.
Unless some really cool mod is out there, I will most likely leave it
alone, since it's already a great machine.

I'll prolly order some parts of WineCountry pretty soon.

Thnx!

Here are some words about hacking a 2002 :
http://www.textura.org/reviews/tenquestions_deepchord_soultek.htm

"One of the most important pieces to the puzzle of Echospace is what
I would refer to as the "Echospace box" which is a customized
Prophet 2002 sampler; it has numerous Mods to its circuitry and many
additions which make it produce some very unique textures of sound."

any clue about these mods ?
regards

No idea about the "Echospace box" but I was thinking about modding my
2002 too. What comes to my mind is:

* external use & control of the CEM3379s
(filter-ins, ext. CV control of frequency, resonance, gain and pan).

* redesigning the control surface to access various editing
parameters simultaneously rather than the doomed one-knob-offline-
editing...

Gonna give little more thought to this after having finished some
other projects on my desk.. If I come up against s.th. interesting
I'll let you guys know about it..
