duncan from r.m.i. here; been using the 2000 & 2002 since 1990 & absolutely love 'em.... << I spent some time on the phone today with David of Wine Country on several issues regarding my "new" 2002...snip....time for a new drive for sure>> there's a load of stuff in earlier posts about suitable drives & how to configure them- look for posts from me, as I have rounded up all the known data for other users quite recently. a regular floppy drive can be made to fit the aperture by fastening a compact-cassette case to it if the gap bothers you. >>MIDI stability and odd Notes with Roland GI-20 guitar controller, David thinks its due to the fact the Roland MIDI stuff sends too much irrelevant data to the Prophet , so I am going to turn on the MIDI filters in the GI-20 and report back to this group<< early midi devices, including the 2k's & the p600, don't like "running status", whatever the heck that's supposed to do anyway. it's known to be a problem when using some roland controller keyboards too, like the pc200 & it's stablemates. >>the 4 on 4 off problem - voices are allocated...snip... best place to get sound out is the MONO/RIGHT jack. Using left and right together or "stereo" out is only for people who really need to separate the sounds...<< the 2k's support what sci called "midi mode 3b" (with 1 being omni & 3a being "normal", & mode 4 which couples the 16 sample locations directly to the 16 midi channels); I used to use this a lot to have two 4-note polyphonic sounds loaded at the same time. I could then force these out hard left & hard right- essentially this is two-part multitimbrality. stereo it is not- the phase coherence is non-existent, but this split architecture has it's uses occasionally. my 2k2 also has the seperate outs; these are of limited use but sometimes were handy for processing drum sounds. (mode 0 is also there- stops everything in or out except sysex/real time. expanded versions, with the +, of all the other modes were used to daisy-chain two 2k's together to increase polyphony intelligently). >>Yes there is no MIDI support to externally control the VCA and filter cutoffs and resonance and ADSR.....it's Pitch Wheel and Mod Wheel only...<< as far as I remember, you can also send aftertouch (channel pressure) to the 2k; but it just maps onto the mod wheel. >>I thought Wine Country was very generous with their time, now if I only had the money for a new drive, I could load the samples bought...c'est la vie >> agreed. look for that post about the floppy drives- any problems finding it, I can post it again from my own archive, let me know. shame WC couldn't rustle me up a new kybd controller IC for my 2k- I'm still heartbroken over that. my 2k2 is fine, though, & still sounds better than my emus. duncan.
