'cinged' chip and broken disk drive

2006-11-21 by tomkah

howdy do
i have both a 2000 and 2002
the 2k developed some type of high resonance on playback and i was
told it needs some type of chip replacement.
just wondering if that is something i might be able to aquire and
install myself.
also the 2002 disk drive stopped functioning and im curious if anyone
has suggestions concerning replacement.
thanks in advance for your time and help.

Tom-
I needed a replacement drive too last year for my prophet. I found the TEAC FD-235HF worked well- the trick is to find a drive that has moveable jumper pins, because the ID of the drive must be set to "0". Most drives that come with pcs are configured as ID1- this will not work in the prophets. I found the drives at a used computer store that refurbished old machines- I bought 2 or 3 of them for under $10. I'm sure ther are many other drives that will work too- just look for those with jumpers that aren't hard wired.
Best of luck with your repairs,
michael

What drives are good replacements? And does it require some fearful patch rewiring?

>>What drives are good replacements? And does it require some fearful
patch rewiring?<<

use the search function & look through old posts about the drives;
there's only about 450 messages here total so it won't take long! :-)

many of us have replaced drives- they don't last forever, sadly, &
they do get thrashed on these machines, especially if you do a lot of
sound design/sampling of y'r own, not just library stuff. look for my
old posts- I once made a point of collecting all the compatible drive
types into one post.
now- what's this "cinged" chip? I don't get how one fault can affect
all the voices, like you describe. can you tell us more about this?
I have schemos for the 2000/2002 somewhere... all the voices are
separate until the output amplifier stages, so if they're all
affected, it's either a screwy control voltage affecting all the
filters (yes, they're analogue cv's inside these things) or the output
audio stage.
it could just be a $1 op-amp that's failed.

duncan.

hi duncan
thanks for responding
i found a couple lists of acceptable drives
for the 2002 so im now searching around
to find one (hopefully cheap!)
as for the audio problem with the 2000,
the unit has been in storage for a while now
so i dont currently have access to it
but from what i remember there was a high pitched
resonsance type distortion that seemed to occur
no matter what sample i was playing back
i would load other disks and the same distortion
would be there
preset sounds, factory disks, didnt matter what
sample i was playing
i posted the problem a long time ago somewhere else
and someone responded saying that 'the chip was fried'
or something like that, and suggesting that i
send the unit to wine country for repair
i guess i never specifically tested to see if it was
all of the voices that were being affected
so i guess there isnt much more i can tell you
without getting the unit and having it available
(which i hope to do at some point)
anyway, thanks again for your help
