ROFL
thx Don
we've all had those "learning" experiences, haven't we?

Like when I absent-mindedly started soldering a board in my SH-2000 with the mains still on....

Made me chuckle, Adam. Glad you lived to tell the tale though! :-)

Nice one Don. I've melted resistors, blown up chips and caps, but, haven't ignited an inductor...yet.

Maybe i need to try harder? ;-}

Adam, glad it wasn't a tube circuit!

Richie, no doubt, pyrotechnics and all.

Failures and blow-ups are the best teachers! There is wisdom gained in
every puff of magic smoke.

I've created light emitting resistors, launched electrolytic caps into
low Earth orbit, blew the lids off of ICs - here we are!

As that Rice Krispies breakfast cereal commercial went: "It's fun to put
some Snap Crackle Pop into your morning"

My most spectacular fail was exploding 8A-rated rectifier brigde wrongly connected to 400W transformer.

I wired up the transformer in an 1176 build the wrong way. I thought
the smell was it just warming up... well it warmed up all right.

I'll bet the transformer made a wonderful harmonic rich buzz before that
poor bridge rectifier blew.

Reversed -15V and Gnd once. Blew all of the 4136s but the 741 survived.

Then there was the line extender famous for melting the magnet wire in an expensive square wave transformer. Some genius put the fuze AFTER the bridge.

You can’t blame myself for that design mistake. I can’t remember if it was Sylvania or Scientific Atlanta. 8D

Sometimes you get lucky - back when I was a student I did lab work with a color-blind student.
I assembled a project around three breadboards of TTL chips. Didn't work. After over an hour of checking every connection, someone noticed it was taking a lot of current - and then that he's connected the black wire to the PSU +5v and the red wire to the 0v. Swapped the wires over and... it worked perfectly!

OTOH, my colleague who put a replacement PCB mains transformer into a Lindos LA100 test set backwards was not so lucky.

Re: [sdiy] Vibe Circuit Design

2026-01-26 by brianw

So far, nobody has mentioned AI...

As soon as I saw "Vibe Circuit Design" on the subject line, I assumed that this was a reference to "Vibe Coding" - which lets an AI try its hand at writing code. Thus, I figured that the red-hot component was the result of allowing an AI to design a schematic without a human reviewing it for obvious mistakes.

What's the background context for this, Don?

Exactly as you said.

"Vibe Coding" is using one of the modern AI platforms to write your code. Sometimes there are errors. "Vibe Circuit Design" is the electronic equivalent. And sometimes there are errors. And unlike software, errors can cause electronic circuits to burst into flames.

Recall the discussion here back in September where there was a question about whether an obscure I2L chip clocked on the rising or fall edge of the clock pulse. I analyzed the circuit and said the falling edge, while Grok and ChatGPT both said the rising edge, and GoogleAI just gave up.

There is so much AI BS on facebook, that I block them all. It's so
irritating that I cannot even laugh at them, although I think the
intention was for them to be funny. The circuit is always drawn with
nice graphics and actual component look instead of symbols, and
ridiculous errors everywhere. The worst part is that judging by the
comments lots of people fall for it.

Paging Harry Bissel and his stories. I seem to recall that he did heavy duty testing of industrial strength equipment with equally spectacular failures.

There's a group on Facebook for Synth DIY (no relation).

Someone wanted to build a mute circuit that detected power up/down. He wanted to avoid the expense of a step down transformer, so he directly applied the utility line power 220VAC to a voltage divider to get the voltage down to 5VAC to apply to the mute circuit. I warned him not to build the circuit because it was a fire hazard and he neglected to include a CRUCIAL COMPONENT that every EE knows about, and it was blatantly obvious that he has no business doing circuit design.

The missing crucial component? THE FUSE.
