On the groups I own, I allow anybody to join but they're all set to Moderated
status so that they can't post spam.  If their first post is spam, I delete the
message and remove the offender.  If the first message is on-topic, I approve
the the message and change the new member's status to unmoderated.  Viola!
Spam-free list!  I have my options set to notify me when members join or leave
the group as a reminder to check for their initial (moderated) post.  Just
another way of doing things.
