Another RMI question...

2001-06-25 by Brian Andrew Marek

Okay, maybe I was a bit premature in announcing the completion of my RMI
overhaul... :)

Up to this point, I had been testing the Electra-Piano through a crappy
transistor guitar amp that I keep my workbench for just such purposes.
Feeling confident that I had everything working, I moved it over to my
performance area and plugged the RMI into my usual keyboard amp
(technically a small PA head and speaker, but it does the trick)... now
here's the problem: whereas the gain designed into a guitar amplifier
boosts the signal plenty for a reasonable performance volume, the signal
is EXTREMELY WEAK going through a flat keyboard amplification system...
as a matter of fact, I had all the levels on my amp cranked to full, and
it wasn't loud enough to disturb my wife upstairs, let alone the
neighbors... so, the question is this - is this normal for an RMI, i.e.
was it designed to be played through high gain guitar amplifiers, or is
this an abnormally low signal my RMI is pumping out? The service manual
says something about the impedence matching transformer sometimes
crapping out, but they also suggest tapping it to see if the problem
goes away, and that has no effect for me...
