Soldering iron wattages

Soldering iron wattages

2004-01-17 by will7370

Hi guys,
I'm starting to get that kit building bug again, after years of
absence from the hobby. I did it pretty heavily back in the 70s-80s,
but fell away for a while. Question: I need a new soldering iron. I
see wattages in the range of 15 through 40. What should I be looking
at for assembly of electronic kits from places like PAiA, etc.?

Thanks,

Rob Williams

Hi Rob,

I would take a temperature controlable iron.

one with temperature settings (not mandatory, depends of what you're
about to do as most component are not very temperature sensitive) and
30-50 W will do the trick.

Have a look at the FAQs at MOTM, usefull hints about material.

http://www.synthtech.com then MOTM/FAQ "What do I need to buy in order
to build these kits?"

Weller rocks! ;)

Now there are also tips on thing in places like the pages around the
ASM-1 and other big DIY pages
(sorry I don't have the relevant links handy but google will give you
the right returns)
