DX7 plays no sound....

DX7 plays no sound....

2006-10-29 by gil_we

I just got a DX7 (first version), and it plays no sound.

I first checked the battey - and indeed it was low. I replaced it with
a new 3v lithium, preset banks has been reset as expexted.

I tried playing some patches from the ROM cartridge (which didn't
suppose to be affected by the battery change), and programming some new
patches, but no sound it heard on neither. Anyhow, I can hear the hiss
coming from the amplification circuit...

does anyone have any idea where should I look at ?
Is that a common problem on the DX7 ?

Thanks, can't wait to make it work ;)

Hello, I think you should also to restore the system settings that were in the memory like master tunning, volume and voice tunning.
By the way, does anybody have a system backup sysex file of the DX7 II or can do it? Please, if you could send it to my email. I would be very grateful.
Regards.

Miguel,

E-mail me at Narfman96 at yahoo dot com if you want the sysex for
the DX7II setup. I couldn't find your address as it's private.
I'm not sure you wan't just any system setup because it defines
evrything from the CC controller id's to the patch change transmit
buffer. All the midi channels for each voice group (A or B)and the
transmit channel (I use ch. 1). Local on/off and sysex on/off are
located in the setup file too. Be careful. It may be easier to set
your synth for the way you use it with your gear and save that setup.
Either way if you contact me I'll send you whatever you need...

Narfman (I'm in all the Yamaha DX groups also.)

Check the output of the DAC, before any lowpass filtering or anything is
applied. If you have a signal there, it's probably fairly simple to track
down and fix the problem (maybe a muting circuit or something). If not, it
may be much more difficult. I don't have schematics or anything but I sort
of understand the basic workings. If the display, buttons, etc. are
operating, the CPU side of things should be in good shape. The CPU should
communicate with the voicing chips (labeled OPS and ENV- OPS is the FM part
and ENV is the envelopes), probably by a one-way 8-bit buss, and the output
of the OPS chip should go more or less directly to the DAC (I don't know
anything more specific than that). The OPS and ENV chips are custom so it's
hard to find info on them and basically impossible to get replacements
(unless you want to take them from a TX7 or something). I think there
aren't any other custom chips (at least in that section), so the basic
signal path can be deduced by looking up datasheets and following traces on
the board. Of course, if you have a service manual, it's a lot easier.

Also, if there are any ribbon cables or connectors relevant to these
portions of the circuit, it would definitely pay to check them...

Hi Narfman,
thanks a lot for your answer and help. I needed the system settings because I had an issue with the keyboard, only one octave was playing, I though it might be a hidden option in the system setup. But it was due to a hardware problem already solved.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards.
Miguel.

Miguel,

there is a procedure to reset the entire DX (and to empty all the mem). I
don't rember it well, but I do have it in a book and can find it if
necessary.

Re: DX7 plays no sound....

Hey buddies,

After following the procedure for master reset proived with the E1
Expansion Card manual (which is on my DX7), I can finally hear
sounds, but it behaves very strangely. Most of the times when
powering it On, sounds will play, but some notes sustain forever,
volume changes between notes, some notes are cut after a few
miliseconds, some do not play at all, some play well.... all
randimally. On the other hand, I could once have it playing just
fine !

What do you think could be the problem ?.....

Could be a problem with the expansion board, or maybe just something loose
or unseated- can you remove it and turn it back into a "normal" DX7?

No I don;t think so. You need the two original ROMS that have been
removed once installing it. Sounds like bad contacts somewhere. I'll
check it out.

I don't think those ROMs would be that hard to come by...

Re: DX7 plays no sound....

2006-10-31 by jim

Hi Miguel

Many years ago, I had a DX7 and put an expansion card to get 4
internal banks.
to install the card, I'd to remove the genuine IC ROM from the DX.
I sold the keyboard but I think I still have these genuine ROMs.
If you need them, tell me, I'll look for them. Just be patient and
make a pray to help me to find them easily !

Re: DX7 plays no sound....

2006-11-03 by gil_we

Well, looking closely at the circuit I found some corroded traces...
I guess there is a great chance that this is the cause of the
problem - will retrace and check again. I always thought this can
only happen on a NiCD battery based synths...

Re: DX7 plays no sound....

2006-11-03 by gil_we

Retraced and so far working ok.

One thing that I haven't managed to set up is the Internal Memory
Protect to set to OFF. Each time I power the machine off, it is set
back to ON. Any idea how do I set it permanently to OFF ?

Thanks all !

I don't know how to fix it, but I have the same issue since I replaced the battery.

Retraced and so far working ok.

One thing that I haven't managed to set up is the Internal Memory
Protect to set to OFF. Each time I power the machine off, it is set
back to ON. Any idea how do I set it permanently to OFF ?

Thanks all !

At least on some synths (can't speak for the DX7 but at least on the Casio
VZ-10M..) it's on by default. You have to manually turn it off every time
you want to save a patch.

yes, you're right, on a DX7 internal memory is switched to ON by
default and as long as I remenber, there is no way to change this!

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Re: DX7 plays no sound....

2006-11-05 by francois basquin

To All,

I finally found the book where the DX7 test procedure is given. Here is :

1 - press simultaneously FUNCTION + 16 + 32 to enter into test mode
2 - "Test mode entry. Are you sure ?" : YES
Then, you will have 11 self-tests. To go to next test, press "YES".

3 - "Test 1 Level Adj VR3" : produces a 440 Hz sine.
4 - "Test 2 Display test" : lights on all the LED digits and the LCD pixels.
5 - "Test 3 Sw 1" : you'll be required to press all the switches.
. Sw 1 -> Sw 32 = Numeric switches 1 to 32
. Sw 33 = Store
. Sw 34 = Internal Memory Protect
. Sw 35 = Cartridge Memory Protect
. Sw 36 = Operator Select
. Sw 37 = Edit/Compare
. Sw 38 = Internal Memory Select
. Sw 39 = Cartridge Memory Select
. Sw 40 = Function
. Push sustain = depress the pedal in the sustain switch
. Push portamento = depress the pedal in the portamento switch
6 - "Test 4 Kbd" : you'll be asked to depress each key. Follow the display.
7 - "Test 5 A/D" : Analog/digital converters.
. Data Entry
. Pitch Bend
. Modulation
. Expression pedal
. Breath control
. After touch
*** WARNING ***
The next test will erase your RAM. If you don't want to, switch off your
DX7.
*** YOU'VE BEEN WARNED ***
8 - "Test 6 Ctr R" : Cartridge read
- You need a special test cartridge to complete this test
- it will copy the content of the test cartridge into the RAM, and compare
the copy with the ROM.
9 - "Test 7 Ctr W" : Cartridge write
- you need a RAM cartridge to complete the test.
- The cartridge will be completely erased.
10 - "Test 8 Ctr RW" : Cartridge read/write. Speaks for itself.
11 - "Test 9 RAM" : RAM testing
Erases everything : internal RAM + RAM cartridge.
12 - "Test 10 ROM" : Check sum of the ROM
13 - "Test 11" : Plays all the notes

Note: I've read you can go from test 5 to test 11 by pressing "YES/+1"
without inserting any cartridge. You should not screwup your RAM, but I've
never tried though. I always switched off after test 5.

(procedure found in "Guitare et Clavier" #65, Jul 86)

HTH,

Fran\ufffdois
