Looking for general guidelines for Electrolytic cap replacement.

Looking for general guidelines for Electrolytic cap replacement.

At what age would you recommend doing a cap swap especially the larger
power supply ones in a synth?

I'm a no-good electronics tech but am accurate with a soldering
iron/heatsink and am just looking for some general guidelines about
lifespan before leakage would be expected.

Thank you.

If your unit has any background hum, then by all means, replace them.
But, if it aint broke, don't "fix" it.
"leakage" characteristics for caps are all over the place depending on Mfg., style and, composition of the cap.

I'd say if the caps are over 20 years old, it's time to change them.

Oh, and make sure you know which way the caps go before you replace them, especially if
you don't have the schematics. (Or in my case, have the schematics but can't read 'em.)

Good caps are ELNA, Illinios, United Chemicon, Mallory, Cornell-Dublier
