Roland M-64c battery

2009-06-13 by scituate_mass

Hello - I just opened up my Roland M-64c memory/RAM cartridge to install a new battery, which I thought would be a CR1/3n 3V. However, the battery inside, which I assume is stock, is a CR1/3n 6V. I did find a 1/3n 6V online, but it is double the length. The 6V inside my M-64C is the same size as a normal 3V 1/3n so, I'm not sure what to do. Is 6V actually necessary for simply maintaining RAM memory? Sorry if this is a simple question and thanks! Damon

Look up a datasheet for the SRAM chip, it should tell you the minimum voltage for memory retention.

Hi Scott - thanks for the suggestion. Mine uses Toshiba tc5517afl
ICs. I wasn't able to find the exact data sheet, but I did find one
for the tc5517cfl. The CFL IC retains data with 2 to 5.5V, so I will
have to assume that installing a 3v will be suficient. The old
battery is still outputting 3.2V, but I suppose I am better off
changing it while the thing is open. Thank you again! Damon T.

You've also probably got a diode between the battery and SRAM chip, but there would be very little current through it, so the voltage drop should be fairly low.
