Yamaha SY99 Disk Drive Belt And Battery Holder

Yamaha SY99 Disk Drive Belt And Battery Holder

2013-03-28 by Paul Krull

Hi Folks:
Does anyone know what a suitable replacement belt for the disk drive for the mighty SY99? There's a helpful YouTube video showing how to go about replacing it but what belt should I use and where's a source for it?
Another question is concerning replacing the CR2032 batteries that back up the samples and RAM. They are soldered in place and that makes finding replacements and installing them hard. Has anyone added a battery holder for the CR2032s in their SY99?
Thanks,
Paul T

No experience with SY99, but put battery holders on my DX7 and several modules of my TX816. Bought holders for 50 cents each, works well. Spacing is slightly different, but pins on the holder are long enough to be bent.
Take extra care of polarity.

To save memory during replacement, you may put another cr2032 in parallel.

Hi:
Thanks for the response. I have seen that ebay listing though not translated into Italian. It's good to know that someone has direct experience with that product and seller and that belt works on the SY99.

Most supplier of electronics components in your neighborhoods once carried a line of CG products which include belts for tape recorders. They have a slde rule style belt measuring device to measure the length and width. As I recall the belt you need is about 7.1 or 7.4 inches. Unfortionally, they have let their stocks dwindle do to lack of sales over the last decade. But often then will have a belt that will work. You may have to go to a couple of stores. There were other makers of belt besides CG too. Expect to pay a few bucks. I have bought almost all locally stocked belts here and will have to go to the next town if someone brings in another Yamaha with a belt drive!

Re: Yamaha SY99 Disk Drive Belt And Battery Holder

Hello Again Folks:
I ended up replacing my old belt driven floppy drive with a beltless Sony drive after experiencing some troubles while trying to clean all of the melted rubber from the old belt off of the fly wheel and spindle of the old drive. I thought I was being careful in handling the drive but the flywheel dropped off of the drive and the threaded axil to which it had been attached disappeared into the disk drive, not sure if I unscrewed it or what. I was not able to put it all back together again in a functional state and the Sony drive fit the same screw holes and has been working flawlessly with my SY disks. I also successfully added battery clips for both CR2032 batteries. I've really been enjoying this synth now that it's working as it should and is full of great sounds. Almost every function while programming involves reinitilizing and with dead batteries you can't do that.
Now I'm almost inspired enough to take on some backlight replacements. The Casio VZ10Ms are both completetly unreadable without a flashlight at this point. Any tips?
Thanks,
Paul T

If you just need a new belt then you can find this on E Bay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-SY99-SY77-SY85-Floppy-drive-belts-Mitsumi-/140981195649?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Pro_Audio_Synthesisers_CV&hash=item20d3225381

Or if you need to replace the whole drive I'm not sure of the exact model, which I hear can be bought for about $5.00 american. The trick is that the ribbon cable has to be modified to work with the SY99 and the usual E Bay sellers offer their drives with the modified cable. Sorry I don't have the information and I see that at the moment there are no replacement drives for the SY99 listed on E Bay.

What model Sony belt less drive did you use? Mine's broken as well.
