Kurzweil PC88 VGM Board Troubles

Kurzweil PC88 VGM Board Troubles

2014-03-16 by <nickap@...>

Hi all - I could use a little advice. I just picked up a VGM board from eBay (advertised as "in good working condition") for my Kurzweil PC88; installed it with no problems, and initially everything seemed fine - I spent some time going through the new sound banks with at first no trouble. But gradually I started hearing an occasional crackle/rumble - a static type sound. I hoped this would clear up, but instead it got worse - by the time I had been using the keyboard for about a half hour, the noise was loud and pretty much constant. I tried swapping out cables etc., and the problem was definitely the keyboard itself. Took out the VGM board, the noise went away. Put it back in, noise came back. So it looks pretty certain that this is a faulty board. My question is, is there anything at all that I can do at this point, other than try to get my money back? I'm assuming the answer will be "no", as I'm not sure there's much that can be repaired on a board like this - but I figured I'd ask, at least. Thanks - Nick

Can you get some digital pics of the board assembly?

I'd like to know if there are any secondary power sources on the PCB and , are there any socketed ICs?

I own a PC88 with that card but I'm not gonna take it apart for now :)

Thanks Scott - actually here's where things stand now: I messaged the guy to say that the board had problems, and he's had me send it back to him - but not for a refund (yet); he thinks he knows what might be the problem and is going to try to repair it. If he can't, then I'll get my refund. I didn't take any photos before I sent it back; however I did find this pic online if you still were interested in taking a closer look at the components on the PCB: http://img.audiofanzine.com/image.php?lang=en&identifier=id&size=normal&module=product&product_id=140000

THAT is an exceedingly complex pcb.

The only thing I'd be able to do is pull EEPROMs and reseat them and check power supply levels
