That's a great story. I have a similar one - I got tired of the limitations of my first synth, an EML-101, back in the early 70's. I became enamoured of building my own modular synth out of E-MU submodules, notwithstanding the fact that I could solder but knew nothing about electronics. I spent many hours on the phone with a patient Dave Rossum and Scott Wedge, who taught me the mysteries of summing nodes. And here I am all these years later still doing it!
