Re: [wiardgroup] Unfair to Music

2008-12-16 by frank death

I think we should expect 'music' to absorb every possibility of the human mind forever, because music itself is, for many people, the deepest form of exploration into the mind.
Often the real advances in art are made by the untrained individual, working in isolation from 'movements', 'schools of thought', and other influences. Music or 'art' is often misunderstood by an audience, and in the end exists for the artist to better understand his/ her own relationship to existence. What matters is that the music/ art succeeds in giving reason for the artist to live- the fact that we can, and do, preserve artworks or music in a physical dimension, is the reason why we have an audience (maybe with exception to 'public' displays, like dancing, and the rituals that Gary mentions, which may have been devised by societies as a way to bring people together in one place, and even as ways to deal with things like grief, eg. dirges at funerals). That doesn't mean that an individual's pursuit in 'art as reason to live' should not exclude the audience...the point being that, ultimately, what do others' interpratations matter, if the artist
succeeds in forming his own image & place in the world?

I think new minds & evolution of the artform will create sounds never before imagined. I don't think they will necessarily come from things like melody-line sequencers and v/oct tracking (*wipes Doc's poo from eye*), but electronic sound definitely has the potential to re-define 'music'. All of those sounds, which on their own amount to unmusical noise, can be rearranged like atoms to form new forms of music.

I also make what used to be called 'noise music', but now 'noise' has heaps of sub-genres, some of which i've never heard of (eg. 'walls' -which i think means 'wall of noise'). Whenever anyone asks me what music i make, i say 'soundscapes'.
A funny story- i was once doing some work for a guy, and he wanted to listen to some of my stuff. So i chuck it on the stereo, and within 10 seconds he says "That's a bit depressing, isn't it?'.
