!Hola Senor Chang!
Fish Pockets! Fish Pockets!! Fish Pockets!!!
At last! The secret of Fish Pockets is out!
take it away Brak!...

"Brak: Fish Pockets?!
[singing] Alla the wonders of the sea
Will be served up hot to me
Baked or broiled or lightly breaded
Just the thought makes me lightheaded
Can there be a smarter thought
'N a bowl of tartar sauce
Fish Pockets, here I come! "

(quick exchange of the Loyal Order of the Wogglebug handshake with
Zorak & Thundercleese...)
Now that the formalities are out of the way-
i enjoyed your analogy a LOT. In my gut i know that for all the years
of etudes, exercises, and the practicing and putting up with
outrageously bigoted and small-minded teachers (with a few sublime
exceptions interspersed) that the only ACTUAL qualification i have is
my apparent disinclination to quit wading out there* constantly. The
academics and the suits in 'the industry' shout constantly from the
banks with all kinds of 'sure-fire' recommendations for hauling in the
big one but none of them have ever gotten wet!
One of the things i do, and, hell, i don't even know why anymore...i
just do it.... is wire-up a 'random' voltage source in my workshop -
just experimenting with some design or another- and i CV it to a
simple Triangle VCO (or a two-pole state variable filtering White
noise) and then just listen ...my rule of thumb is to listen for at
least 20 minutes, 40 is better.... and then i 'decide' if the design
is 'musical'. This is , of course, intended as a prototyping or
qualifying activity and done with the expectation that i will frame
the 'good' designs into full-fledged modules and use them in my main
rig upstairs...but in the last few years a funny thing has started to
happen....
i just stay in the basement, listening ... for a LONG time!
and i feel less and less like 'developing' the designs beyond the
little tri-VCO or 2P-VCF test-jig.
OF COURSE this is creeping senility!!!! Absolutely - no question!
....but i'm enjoying the 'music' more and more! ...more than my CD's!
two comments about this:
1) Could your 'fish->pocket' analogy possibly be more apt to this
phenomenon?!!
2) It's exactly THIS kind of grotesquely inefficient 'R&D' that prof.
Richter is trying so desperately to carve out of his production schedule.
All irish folks have a fetish for good analogies, Senor Chang... are
you sure your name isn't O'Chang?
