[singing] Alla the wonders of the sea
Will be served up hot to me
Baked or broiled or lightly breaded
Just the thought makes me lightheaded
Can there be a smarter thought
'N a bowl of tartar sauce
Fish Pockets, here I come! "

Now that the formalities are out of the way-
i enjoyed your analogy a LOT. In my gut i know that for all the years
of etudes, exercises, and the practicing and putting up with
outrageously bigoted and small-minded teachers (with a few sublime
exceptions interspersed) that the only ACTUAL qualification i have is
my apparent disinclination to quit wading out there* constantly. The
academics and the suits in 'the industry' shout constantly from the
banks with all kinds of 'sure-fire' recommendations for hauling in the
big one but none of them have ever gotten wet!
One of the things i do, and, hell, i don't even know why anymore...i
just do it.... is wire-up a 'random' voltage source in my workshop -
just experimenting with some design or another- and i CV it to a
simple Triangle VCO (or a two-pole state variable filtering White
noise) and then just listen ...my rule of thumb is to listen for at
least 20 minutes, 40 is better.... and then i 'decide' if the design
is 'musical'. This is , of course, intended as a prototyping or
qualifying activity and done with the expectation that i will frame
the 'good' designs into full-fledged modules and use them in my main
rig upstairs...but in the last few years a funny thing has started to
happen....
i just stay in the basement, listening ... for a LONG time!
and i feel less and less like 'developing' the designs beyond the
little tri-VCO or 2P-VCF test-jig.
OF COURSE this is creeping senility!!!! Absolutely - no question!
....but i'm enjoying the 'music' more and more! ..
hello to all,
i normally just lurk here, learning from my betters but had to comment here -
firstly, thanks to the good doctor for turning me onto the wonderful weirdness of brak ! great fun !
secondly, the good doctors tale of his descent into the maels......... eerrrrr.......... workshop hit close to home stylistically (given that i`m a clumsy, thumb-fisted axe murderer
when it comes to doing s.d.i.y. !) - i like to set up various unpredictable (i`m trying to avoid debate over "random", "psuedorandom", etc.) c.v. sources and then listen to them over long periods of time, on the order of several days or more, for suitability to what i`m trying to do at the moment while also refining the audio part of the patch. for me, this works and is fun but to some folks, it is a slow process and "too noisy". while they could easily be right, i still find it a satisying way to create my "electro-noise" (avoiding the "music" constraining term here) tho i must admit, it is "slow" if you create by western clock time - luckily, i don`t.
and, like the good doctor, i find myself listening to this stuff preferentially over cd`s at home - it seems i listen to cd`s in the car now - if a final piece comes out of some exploration, great !, but the learning (and the fun) is in the question not in the answer, i.m.h.o..
and speaking of my betters, don`t let the good doctors self-effacing manner decieve you, he is an amazing artist - just listen to the "wiard radio commercials" he did, fantastic stuff !
grants artistry in the hardware domain is also formidable and something for which i can only say "thank you !" .
compared to folks like these, to paraphrese, i am only an egg ..........................
best,
dave
p.s. - i hope the above ramblings made some sort of sense !
