Blue Meanie 2003

Blue Meanie 2003

2003-11-16 by Gary Chang

After 18 months, my Blue Meanie is complete! I am posting a
preliminary photo.

Tremendous thanks to Grant for his efforts, and all of the other
artisans that contributed in this project (Bill Maguire,
welder/fabricator; Rainbow Powdercoat; Cynthia, Cyndustries for the 3
amp psu).

In time, I will post better fotos of the system, but after I play with
it for a while!

What a lovely sight, and an admirable system. Biiiig congrats. Also,
good decision to make the case blue as well, IMO.

Now how can I get the pictures to be displayed "full size" instead
of "screen size"? (droool ;-)

Re: Blue Meanie 2003 - final fotos

2003-11-17 by Gary Chang

I have taken the first two photos of the Meanie down, replacing them
with three newer shots, a front, side and back view of the system.

The back view shows the dual power supplies - the top 1.5 amp supply
powers the top 12 modules, isolating them for stability. The bottom
3 amp PSU supplies the bottom modules and will also power the table
top console (which houses the Milton, 1200 series modules, etc.)

When the wood work is finished, a wooden stand that matches the table
top console will elevate the 24 modules off the table top, lining it
up with the panel level of the console's modules.

Unfortunately for me, Grant has already finished the 1200 series
panels, so they will be BLACK.... Aargh!

This is the nicest Synth I have ever saw. Since 2 years I am working
every day on my 11-Module Wiard and am enjoying it so much. And, as I
am not the guy making super-complicated sounds, it does sound
wonderful with even not so complex patches. Yesterday I just made
drones with the 4 VCO's in my System, modulating them very softly
with filtered noise and LFO's. This is just blowing me away. And
after checking that sound with all my modular filters I ended again
with the Omni's (still love them!).

At the moment, I plan to bring other brands into the Wiard 300
Format, I even plan to make them blue. I am looking everywhere to
find these bakelite Davies 1900 H Knobs, but can't find them. But
they are the best to touch.

I would love to here sounds from your blue meanie!

Olivier

i also think that is probably the most beautiful synth i have ever
seen, you are one lucky fellow!

i got to thinking about the price, and then realised that if you
spent the same on a current sts serge system, although you would end
up with a VERY nice system, it probabaly wouldn't be nearly as
powerful.

do you have a list of which 300 modules are included in your synth?

i would also love to hear some of your patches made on this monster!

Allied Electronics (http://www.alliedelec.com/) has them for about
$2.00 each. The Allied Stock# is 543-0400.

MSC Direct has them at

Quantities 1 - 99
$1.30

Quantities 100 - 199
$1.17

Quantities 200 - 499
$1.11

Quantities 500 +
$1.04

Part# 01726884

Cheapest I've seen (since radio shack stopped offering them), but still
too much....

Interesting, that's a lot less expensive than if you buy them direct
from the Davies factory!

they don't have the indicator line. You could get them from Mouser
like that. Kinda useless that way.

I have about 100 of them with no line that I bought about 7 years ago
and haven't used. Anybody want those? I'll make a good deal with you.

The part number is correct, 1900-h. The picture is wrong. They do have
the line. I just recieved 100 of them yesterday.

Get 'em while they're hot !
