Fwd: j.a.g. and audio

Fwd: j.a.g. and audio

2006-09-09 by davevosh@aol.com

hello to all -
okay, a question for those smarter than me on the list (i suspect that includes most of you ! :^) ) -
i had the silly idea to try the j.a.g. as a sort of "stereo-izer" for audio signal`s - feed the same source into both the "x" and "y" input`s and take the "stereo" output from some combination of the out`s 1 - 8 to get a signal with some sort of weird phase / location effect.
a problem i encountered is that for any type of input, there seem`s to be a noticable base level (noise floor - ?) of hum - ? since i`m unfamiliar with the technical processes embodied in the module, i wondered if this is "normal" or if i`ve overlooked something or am doing something wrong - ?
any idea`s ?
thanks,
best,
dave

Dave,

For stereo control using the JAG, take your joystick outputs to the XY inputs, then use whatever JAG outputs you like and feed them to the control voltage inputs of two VCAs. Feed your audio source to be stereoized to both VCA inputs. It may be useful to have VCAs with bias/offset (initial gain) and CV attenuators to adjust the levels to your liking.

The JAG is a multiple element nonlinear amplifier, using diode break point type amplifier configurations. Feeding audio into it could be interesting, but I suspect you’ll get some mild distortion effects rather than a stereo effect. I don’t know why it would be exhibiting hum, unless some of the nonlinear amplifiers are amplifying very low level signals, including some 60 Hertz coupling that may exist in your system.

The only way I know that 60 Hz hum could get into the JAG is through the power supply. I
suspect that your supply is over loaded.

One simple test: do you still hear a hum from the output if there is no input connected? If
yes, that indicates a power supply hum for certain.

The JAG is a series of "trough" circuits. That is, it computes the minimum of a series of
input functions. This is highly non-linear and produces an audio effect like ring
modulation (inharmonic partials).
