Wiard "Uber" East Coast Oscillator now shipping in Euro-style

Wiard "Uber" East Coast Oscillator now shipping in Euro-style

2010-05-28 by Grant

While I swore I would never do a sawtooth core oscillator because there were too many already, several small developments have lead to my "uber" core oscillator begin shipping this week from Malekko.

1. I realized a common public domain sawtooth phase shifter could be coupled to Terry Michaels sawtooth core, perfectly.

2. Terry showed me a degenerarive emitter sine shaper he has been tinkering with for the last 9 years.

So we end up with all the usual suspects for a "East Coast" sawtooth VCO coupled with some "minty fresh" new features.

With the exception of "Wavemakers" who has always beats me to everything, we have:

1. A set of three outputs all phase variable from their "I"(inphase) origiana lset. Q would be wrong here since Q(quadrature) is only 90 degrees while this is 0 - 360 degrees. Call them "V". These can be summed with various inversions and phase relationship to produce an unusually large number of source waveforms (fits both East and West Coast models)

(don't forget every other output on the "Boogie" is phase inverted, with Freq set to max the "Boogie" is just a set of 2 followers and 2 inverters)

2. Hard Sych: Old Skool, Use of SQR2 into synch of second oscillator produces "phase modulated synch" invented by Ron Rivera and heard by only those blessed with access to the tiny number of Ron Rivera modified 2600s and Minimoogs. Also try "Anti-Oscillator" Mayhem input to Synch. Tasty!

3. The best sine converter I have ever seen. Typical THD readings for various synths if they bothered to have a sine wave:

ARP 2600 10% THD
Buchla 258 3% THD
Wiard 341 <1.0% THD
Malekko "Oscillator" <0.2% THD

Some people have the impression that the Euro-Format is some how "inferior" to the 300 and 1200 series. Consider them each an orchestral section, different emphasis, different aesthetic results, same "shark-like" obsession with making you laugh with delight for the effort of wafting a feather.

Also all Wiard products interconnect seamlessly with each other. A mixed, 300, 1200, Euro system is not even noticeable by the composer, except for the ever increasing size of the headband you will need for your hat.

Well, I agree that euro is not intrinsically inferior to 1200- and 300 format modules (though I do tend to associate it with a/getting ripped off and b/loads of egregriously bad panel designs that make me turn into konkuro when I see pictures of them)

for me a practical problem with the format w/r/t my favourite instrument maker is that I already built a case for 300- and 1200- size designs, with drilled rack rails and 15V power, and I can't see a way of fitting these designs into my case neatly. I could use the euro case I bought to house the (now sold) plan b debacle modules I had to add a row of these pieces, in fact I probably will eventually, but that will put a subset of my Wiard modules in a different place to the others, I like/want to have them all together.

I wonder if it would be possible to get some of these newer pieces in 15V/frac format as limited runs or suchlike. I would be willing to supply schaeffer panels at my expense to make this happen.

best etc
