I guess the best way to understand what a preset is is to simply press
the preset button in the *mode/view* area and choose one. Then, press
the other preset button in the *edit* area(top left-hand side of yout
xx7).In the preset edit scroll down one page and you will see the
*instrument* screen.Move the cursur to L1 and scroll around and you´ll
notice that the preset can be made up of 4 instruments (layers).
Now, for drum sounds, these instruments can be either a whole kit
spread out over the keyboard range or a single drum spread out over
the keyboard range.
If ,as I do, you only ever need a kick drum on track 1 then (depending
on which ROM you have) you can create a preset with only kicks spread
all along the keyboard range (i.e a kick will sound a C# when C# is
played on the keyboard - alternativly you can choose a whole bunch of
kicks that sound completely different -like a palette of kicks).
Elswhere in the preset edit function you can change all sorts of
things like filters, patchcords etc (see the names underneath the
trigger buttons - the LEDs light up as you scroll.
The manual also speeks of instant gratification - they don´t mention
that this is soon followed by instant frustration! It takes a lot of
practice and hanging around in this group, trawling the archives - but
I´m sure you´ll get there soon.
Don´t let it grind you down - its a great machine.
