Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

I'm really new at this. I just got my XL-7 yesterday,

and am working my way through the manual,

which is impossible because I stop every two mintutes to play around with 
the XL-7 for 2 hours.

Anyway I hardly know any terminology.

If I am sequencing sounds that are on another device with the XL-7 do the 
keypads control the sounds on the other device,

and will a whole octave of the sound be on the keypads even if it is just 
one note on the other device?
