Re: [xl7] Need Advice

Well, this isn't easily answered (it really depends on how you want to
work), but I'll try to cover the basics. For purposes of this discussion,
I'll refer to everything in Pattern mode, though the same principles apply
if you're in song mode too. Basically, each track in a pattern can be set
to play either th internal PX-7 sounds, an external synth (like the ones
you mention), or both at the same time. When you go into Pattern Edit
mode, the screen that let you specify this routing is the very last one,
so go there and set it to "EXT" for the tracks you want to control your
external synths.

The other setting you need to pay attention to is the Midi Channel number
assigned to each track. By default, each track is assigned to the same
numbered channel, ie Track 1 is Midi channel 1, Track 2 is MIDI channel 2,
etc. I would recommend keeping it this way while you are learning, it's
much easier to deal with. The next step you need to do, is set each of
your external synth so that they respond on a unique midi channel. For
example, say you want to have track 5 of a pattern in the PX-7 controlling
your AN1x. You would need to go into Pattern Edit for that Pattern, set
the destination to "EXT" and double check that the midi channel is set to
be #5 (again, this is the default, so you should be fine). Next connect a
midi cable from the Midi 1 out on the PX7, to the MIDI in of the An1x. Now
you need to set the the AN1x to respond to midi data on channel 5, you'll
have to check the manual for that piece to see how to do this, I don't
have one so I don't know. That's it!

You should not be able to play and control the AN1x from the PX7. If you
want to be able to record knob movements on the AN1x into the PX7, just
connect a midi cable from the out on the AN1x to the Midi In on the PX-7.
You'll also need to go into the MIDI Menu on the PX-7 and make sure MIdi
thru is set too "OFF" so that you don't get a feedback loop.

Here's the situation. I have an E-mu PX7 with Beat Garden,MP7, and
XL7 ROMS. I also have a Korg Karma, Korg Wavestation, and a Yamaha
AN1x synth. I'm primarily a keyboard player, so I'm fooling around
with the synths when I have the time. I'm just starting to fool
around with the PX7. I want to utilize the PX7 with my other gear. I
keep reading about how people use the xx7 to control other gear, etc.
The question is, I'm not sure I understand this. Can I connect the
PX7 to my synths (MIDI, I guess) and have everything playing at the
same time? I'm not quite sure how this works. I hope this isn't a
stupid question.

I've been spending more time with the PX7, so I'm starting to
understand it a little bit better. I get frustrated sometimes,
because it seems like a job programming tracks on it. Again, this is
coming from someone who plays the piano, keys, etc. Sometimes I
think about selling it and getting another synthesizer, but
something tells me that I would be making a mistake to get rid of
it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Domenic
