XL7s (and other Command Stations) come up on ebay all the time, typically for around $450 or less. Buy from a seller with good feedback and a long track record of sales, and its a fairly safe transaction. Ditto with ROMs. The real issue is that you've bought into a dead-end product in terms of future ROMs, etc. Not a big deal to me -- I bought my PX7 and ROMs for the sound it could make at that time. Emu will probably continue to service broken ones for a few years, so you're okay there but overall they seem to be very reliable. No worse really than buying a vintage synth, actually a bit better because it hasn't been out of production all that long.
