Changes in sound when recording

2005-02-10 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I want to share something with you guys that I've noticed about my XL-
7. Last night, I was recording some patterns from the XL-7 onto my
Yamaha AW16G. I set-up my patterns as pieces of the song - pattern 1
would be the intro, pattern 2 is the first verse, pattern three is
the bridge, pattern 4 is the chorus, etc. Each pattern of a song has
the same drum kit/instruments. I record each drum part on a seperate
track in the XL-7s sequencer (ie: Kick on track 1, snare on 2, hi-hat
on 3, etc.). Then, I record the tracks using the same method into my
Yamaha AW16G. When I record the hi-hats, I've noticed that they don't
always sound the same when the pattern switches. For instance, the hi-
hat in the intro pattern and the first verse pattern sounds bright
and "ting-y" (I know it's not a word). When it switches to the
chorus, it sounds like I've applied a filter to it, because it now
sounds dull. So I'll start the process again, and the hi-hat will
sound fine until I get to the third verse (or somewhere else), and
it'll go dull again. By the time the final chorus comes along - it
sounds bright again. Now, the difference is sound is not horribly
noticeable, but it's enough that I can notice it (even if someone
else might not be able to). I don't know if it's a problem with the
XL-7 or the AW16G. I've tried switching cables, but the problem
continues. Has anyone else had this problem?

I should mention that I only use the Protean Drums ROM for my drum
sounds.

Thanks for any help/advice,
Fab
