those are both great! i'm not sure if i'd use the first trick, but it's
great nonetheless.

right now my studio is in limbo, so i haven't been doing anything useful
with my toys... but using the buttons on a PC-1600x i can have different
patterns assigned to different buttons. this makes the UI somewhat more
like an RM1x (which gave me the idea to do it on my XL7), and i won't have
to fight with the data-wheel on a dark stage -

some day aaron will reveal the secret sysex code for un/muting tracks
(nudge nudge, hint hint) and then i'll also be able to un/mute tracks with
a remote button on the far end of a midi cable. the real reason i want to
be able to do that via midi is to have variations on, say, a percussion
sound that's isolated on track 'x'. i can program a variation on track
'y'. then using a midi button i'd be able to simultaneously mute track x
and unmute track y, or the other way around. the other way to do this
would require two copies of an otherwise identical pattern, so this saves
memory. it would also allow seamless switching anywhere within a looping
pattern. i suppose it would be possible to also do this with x-mix, but it
seems cumbersome.

so aaron.... any info you can send me, even if it's just some code and
some implementation notes (on or off list) about muting tracks via sysex
would be much appreciated, and i'd be happy to post a polished version to
the list after i get it debugged and optimized (like i did with the
pattern change sysex). the sysex for x-mix would also be useful, and i'm
sure that would facilitate some ~nice~ tricks.... is there a hidden mode
that makes the command stations output sysex in real-time? that would be
~so~ useful to "capture" and reverse engineer all of the undocumented
sysex that i need to make some of these tricks happen...
