Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

          I have a very basic question, I must be doing something 
wrong cause I cant believe this is a buggy XL-7 (running V 1.31 OS).

I am trying to enter my own pattern (I start with entering the kick 
drum, hats, etc) sometimes (even though the pattern is saved) when I 
play back the pattern the original present track that I used (kick 
drum, hats 1 or hats2, etc) is not preserved to the track that I 
assigned to (one of the keys 1 to 16) instead I end up hearing all 
the tracks (say i recorded 3 or 4) with the present preset - even 
though the preset button is not turned on.

So I record track 1 - Kick drum (using some preset sound say 34 in 
the XL-7)
track 2 - hats 1 (another preset sound say 20)
track 3 - hats 2 (another preset sound...say 21)

save the pattern to some name "X"

At a later stage I try inputting a snare to track 4 (say using preset 
25) and when I play the whole pattern (tracks 1 to 4) I end up hearing
the whole pattern as if I recorded it using preset 25 (or whichever 
preset is active when I hit the preset button). 

What am I doing wrong and why is this happening, none of the audition 
keys or turned on. I tried this in both quick edit and Program mode 
didnt make any difference.

Also does it matter what sounds in the preset I assign to which 
tracks (of the 16)...meaning can I assign a synth track to track 1 
and a kick drum to 9 if I wanted?
