Using the XL-7 with Protools (or any DAW)

2002-12-23 by iproduce@bellsouth.net

I'm trying to decide what the best way to bring my XL-7 tracks into Pro Tools would be. I understand how to route the outputs; that's not the issue. But getting up to 16 tracks on the XL all out thru 6 little outputs is a little nerve racking.

Thus far I've tried:
-using midi start/stop to make multiple passes thru the mains (so I can enjoy the fx) onto stereo tracks into PT and selectively muting/unmuting various instruments. The problem I am encountering is that the midi drift unglues the timing somewhat and is not consistent every time.
-Sending all the drums to the Stereo Mains for the effects, then using the
other four outputs and panning hard left/hard right to get each instrument (or
as much separation as 4 channels allows me) on it's own track in PT. The drag here is all the drums are now lumped together.

I was going to try:
-using midi start/stop, and recording a long string of audio for each pattern
while I mute/unmute the various instruments (so no restarting - I figure that
will keep the timing tighter), then I would cut/paste them back together in
PT. This seems very time consuming tho.
-??

What are you folks that record into PT or any other DAW do? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
