The problem is oxidization I believe, this problem is typical on rotory knobs.
Unless someone knows differently (Aaron??) this is fixable by using an
antioxidizer, like DeOxit which works like a charm.  On a side note, NEVER use a
product like this on the grease packed knobs, it will dissolve the grease and
make your knob move too easily.  If the data wheel is an optical component (some
types are) there is less chance of easily fixing it.

I have exactly the same problem. Yes, I even got my XL-7 repleaced by
another one, but after a while it got the same problem again.

Since so many have has this problem, I believe it's something about
the hardware. Perhaps not absolutley the best hardware components...
If anyone finds a solution, please tell me about it.
