RE: [xl7] "Frozen Clouds" Final version and Notes

2003-05-14 by Andre Lewis

Ok, so I finally listened to it, and it sounds gret, great sounds good job on
the beats! After listening to it though I get the feeling it wants to go into a
key change after the first main part (around 2:00 min) maybe up a third. Don't
know how possible that is. Are most of these XL7 sounds? If so shouldn't be
too hard? You'd probably have to change the arrangement a bit too, so maybe it
isn't worth it. Sounds good tho, even over my crusty laptop speakers... ;)

Ok, thanks to everyone that took the time to listen to the rough draft and
give me ideas. After a bad spell of writer's block, it helps to know
you're at least on the right track again! Anyway, after a couple more
marathon sessions working on it, the track is now done and available for
anyone that wants to take a listen:

http://rEalm.iuma.com "Frozen Clouds"

The players:

Emu XL-7 - Provided all of the sounds except the intro pads and guitars.
This was originally a 16 measure pattern that I wrote to use in a
downtempo live set, though the addition of the guitar stuff changed it so
much that I'll need to find a way to mimic it in the XL-7. The drums are
all doubled up inside the XL-7, a very easy procedure that makes a huge
difference in the way they sound. Easy to do on the mc505 too!

Guitar - A custom-shop Ibanez S540FMTT running through an ADA MP2 midi
tube guitar pre-amp, with a Digitech TSR-24s on the effect sends. A
really basic tone, with a hint of reverb and delay added at this stage.

Access Virus KC - The pads in the intro are just two held chords from the
Virus, using my own patches from a forthcoming User Soundset I'm doing.

Cubase SX - All of the arranging and recording took place with this. Plug
ins that got heavy use: TL-Audio's EQ-1, PSP24 Lexicon Delay emulator
(what a kick ass plug in!), Antares Tube (one of my new favorites), Ohm
Boyz Delay, and SX's Dynamics.

Wavelab 4 - Used this one for the mastering, with the Waves Linear
Mastering plug ins: LinLowBand EQ, LinMB, and L2.
