Under the audio tab there is a window to select the default midi 
playback device. Like I said it worked fine with my MOTU MIDI Express 
XT when sonar would not, Id give it a try! 

I can confirmation this approach [for sending sysex data] using:
--Windows Media Player 6.01 [older than current version]
--Win98SE

(1) Go into: Settings | Control Panel | Multimedia | MIDI output 
(2) Set to PC's external midi out port.
