Aaron should make us a new XX-7 OS because....

These features would be nice:

- Snap mode for the knobs. Not only in Quick Edit, but Volume and Pan too
(especially Volume please!).
- The ability to Select more than one track for Erase, Copy, Cut, and
Paste commands. Even if it's only all of them, maybe in the field where
you select the track, you could choose the letter "A" to indicated all
tracks.
- The ability to XMIX more than one track at once (no idea how to
implement this).
- Some way to see the name of currently playing Pattern without stopping
playback. Currently you can only see the current location, but not it's
name.
- A way to see if Presets are currently being used in a Pattern.
- Finer tempo resolution!!!!! :)
- Press and HOLD the power button for power off, not just 1 press and wait
5 seconds.
- More Sysex dump options. I'd like to see an "ALL" function that sends
everything in the machine in one pass (regardless of how long this takes),
good for those people on Macs that want to save their User data but can't
use E-Loader, for obvious reasons. Also, an "ALL User Presets" would be
nice too, much easier than having to wait and switch banks when you're
trying to save your Presets. Finally, an "All User Multi's" too.
- Realtime preview of Transpose, Quantize, etc.
- All Pattern Edit functions should work without stopping the sequencer
(hey, it is a wish list!).
- A way to copy arp data to a track as MIDI notes.
- The option to turn real-time Filter Resonance on or off. I for one,
thought it sounded fine and would like to see this re-added to the OS
again.

More Shortcut ideas:

- Edit + Track up/down buttons toggles between the 16A and 16B channels.
For instance, Press EDIT+Track Up would take you to Channel 1B, press them
again and you go to 1A, etc.

- Edit + Save will automatically perform a Revert To Saved (thus acting
sort of like an Undo command).

- Edit + Erase will initialize the current Pattern.

- Edit + Audition will toggle the Arp on or off for the currently selected
Preset on the basic channel.

- When in Loop mode, Pressing Stop + Play should take you to the beginning
of the Loop, not the beginning of the Pattern.

So how about it Aaron? What do we need to do to help you make this
happen? I can't imagine you would be open about telling us you still have
the ability to make OS improvements if you didn't have something in mind.
:) I can guarantee a lot of people would be willing to send some money
your way to make this happen, name your price :)

RE: [xl7] Aaron should make us a new XX-7 OS because....

2004-01-12 by Stu

I have an E-MU Ultra with RFX, and the RFX responds to CC messages to
control fx parameters and fx levels. I used to have a Doepfer Regelwerk
which I could use to send CC messages (of a preset value) by pressing a
button, which would instantly change the fx. Using knobs doesn't give the
same effect as there is always a slight 'fade-in', and you can press
multiple buttons together, whereas you can only twist 2 knobs at one time...

On the XX-7 it would be useful for changing the Mix Output parameter on the
fly (CC79), or maybe the Arp Status (cc80) plus anything else you might
want.

Regards,

Stu

How about the ability to hook up a computer keyboard to enter text
like the emulator? USB?

Even better would be a way to display and edit the global commands
on my computer, especially when I am trying to get my external gear
to work better, like with program changes and such.....

But, alas, one that will never happen. USB is host/slave, unlike
firewire. It would be the same as trying to plug your USB mouse into
your USB computer keyboard and expecting something to happen.

  |everything in the machine in one pass (regardless of how long this takes),
  |good for those people on Macs that want to save their User data but can't
  |use E-Loader, for obvious reasons.
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |

But, alas, one that will never happen. USB is host/slave, unlike

Song made with the XL-7

2004-01-13 by mark sottilaro

Hey gang,

Finished editing a little peice a few days ago. Most
of the purcussion and instruments except the guitar
and bass are coming out of either the E-MU XL-7 or
it's pal the Audity 2000. There's some Roland and
Korg synths here and there as well. Loops are done on
an Electrix Repeater. It's one big mess is what it
is! Anyway, enjoy. Any comments would be
appreciated. I was going for a dancey/indian ambient
kind of thing.

hi all

my very personal wishlist:
- Autoscroll on/off option in Grid Recording + navigations options between
the different screensets for each bar (basically the possibility to edit a
bar segment even if it's the not the one playing at the moment)
- sets of shortcuts keys combinations to jump to user definable screensets.
assigning your most used screensets to key combis would allow to move
around the OS way faster, without very much wheel scrolling (kind of
annoying, to me)...

Something´s been bugging me for a while now thats turning into a bain.
"Save preset to..." window:
When saving presets it´s not posible to move the curser to under the
catergory (those 3 lettered prefixes before the preset name) or the
preset name itself, yet its posible in the "copy preset from..."
window.
I´ve been making my own catergories and know which ones are old and
can be overwritten but the locations are strewn all over my user banks
thus having to scroll through all the banks to find a new location.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or is it my machine? Maybe
its just the way I´ve organised my presets that needs to be changed.

I got around this by copying an initialized Preset to ALL of my User
Preset locations when I first got the machine. That way, when I'm saving
a new Preset, I only need to look for the "Init Preset" to know that's a
safe location to save to.

StudioWare panels for Cakewalk

This functionality may be possible for Cakewalk users. A user in
another E-Mu group has designed a StudioWare panel that allows users
to edit SOME preset parameters. I have suggested some other panels.
I think a global command [master menu] panel would be possible.

I have suggested that he post the panel here for the benefit of other
Cakewalk users here. He has made some changes and will probably post
it here (or I will, with permission) after it is refined.

BTW: I briefly tested the 1st version of the panel. With it (for
example), you can alter envelope parameters in real-time, filter
changes, etc. and have the corresponding sysex parameters recorded in
your track. (Possible limitation: I believe this will only work with
the basic channel.)

Also, if anyone remembers my Randomizer and Parametizer projects
(proposed/discussed last summer), I am hoping these can be realized
via StudioWare panels.

Anyone here into designing StudioWare panels and willing to
coordinate efforts?

This might be nice if it can be turned off--perhaps on a port/channel
basis. Otherwise, it might muck up connected gear. I'd hate to
change presets on the E-Mu and have it do program changes on my other
gear. But I can see using the master knob to change external patches
on occasion.

Renaming preset categories

Just a tip I posted many months ago.

When I tweak or create my own presets, I have named them with an
initial upper case letter. This way the navigator finds it first.

eg: arp. --> Arp., bts --> Bts.

I haven't done this in a while, but I did it from the Edit Preset
Name menu.

Also, I would be interested in other naming conventions people use.

Re: [xl7] Renaming preset categories

All of my Presets get the category "rlm". :) My Presets are all pattern
specific, so I really don't need any fancy naming conventions.

Renaming preset categories

I adopted this excellent suggestion, rEalm!!! I recommend it.

Also, when working on presets, or setting up layer configuration, I
have used all blanks (or other special characters) so the navigator
finds them first when positioning the cursor under the prefix and
scrolling.

Option to rEalm's suggestion: create a bank (or subset) using the
initialized preset at the end of the ROM. This way you have ROM
pointers already set up for that rom.

eg
127^1: :A.O. V1.0
127^3: :XL-1 1.4

Hope this helps.

Re: [xl7] Renaming preset categories

2004-01-13 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

To clarify, that's the Preset I was referring to when I said
"initialized".

More ideas rehashed:
About once a month I go through and figure out which presets I'm using in
my Patterns. I made a simple Excel chart that only has the Preset
LOcations listed (i.e. 000:0 through 127:3). Then I go through my
patterns and check off which Presets are being used. Any Presets location
unchecked on my chart get over-written with the initialized Preset,
thereby freeing up more User memory for my own Presets. I never thought
it would be a problem, but I'm actually getting close to using up all of
my User locations! Doh!

 Hehe,
That was what inspired me to do it!

"I haven't done this in a while, but I did it from the Edit Preset
Name menu."

Naming the preset is not the problem. It´s not being able to use the
catergories to weed out the old unused presets thats annoying.

"Also, I would be interested in other naming conventions people use."
Me too.
I thought the upper-case tip was a good one (thx) so I use it now for
presets that should NOT be overwritten ....Its a nightmare going back
to old patterns/songs and esp. multisetups and fiding all the presets
don´t fit and throw the mix right out the window.
 I use KIK/SNR/HHT/TOM/CYM/PAD/BAS.. etc in a default multisetup -
Like a canvas. SNR for example says to me :
dont overwrite - track 2 - sounds like something that could pass as a
snare.
Any sort of sketchboard sounds that are evolving but aren´t specificly
used I put the uppercase only for the first letter in the catergory.
e.g.
don´t overwrite:PAD
sketchboard:Pad
overwrite:pad

The trouble is that my userbanks are now full of uppercase (mostly
sketchboard)presets so im back where i started ;)
I do alot of "save preset to" with drum kits so that my desired
intrument is at C3. It makes on-the-fly grid recording/editing quicker
IMO.
The catergory feature is not everyones cup of tea but it goes well
with my style of working.
Anymore tips on preset/track/pattern organisation much appreciated.
(I´m really unorganised BTW)
:P

one thing I would like to see for the Command Stations
is the ability to scale the internal digital headroom.

as it stands, it works quite well for multi-timbral use
with many voices playing, and those peaky resonant
Z-planes.

that said, it does not work as well when the CS is
being used for singlular, solo voices in a non multi-
timbral context.

Gonna be hard to do. One thing I noticed, is that the Preset Instruments
(samples) themselves are recorded at about -14dBFS, so right from the bat
the samples are more or less pretty quiet.

how do you know that given there is no means to access
the samples directly, without being gain-staged by
the engine itself?

my guess is the samples are at full scale (or close to
it), and that -14dbFS you are experiencing is a function
of the scaled back digital headroom.

as always, I could be wrong! ;)

Re: Aaron should make us a new XX-7 OS because....

Aaron totally rocks. I had wondered about that email address... Kudos
to Sean for bringing him back for OS 2, too. (Best of luck with the
new Apple gig, Aaron - as a Mac guy myself I hope you have a long and
mutually beneficial relationship).

I'd like to add:

- The ability to transpose part of a track instead of the whole
thing. This could use the same bar-selection screen that cut, copy
and paste use. Currently I'm cutting the parts I don't want to
transpose, transposing, and then pasting the untransposed parts back
in. It's just as tedious as it sounds, and one of the few times the
Command Station gets in my way when creating tracks.

- Some kind of realtime transpose control would be really cool too.

- MIDI messages to change patterns, like Matt Picone said.

And:

Yes, please. The Loop mode is nice to have but this is really the
ideal solution.

From rEalms's list (all good suggestions, btw):

> - A way to copy arp data to a track as MIDI notes.

This would be nice. I suspect the sequencer/synth segregation may get
in the way of this, however.

thought it sounded fine and would like to see this re-added to the OS
again.

I missed this. Was this in a beta OS or something?

Heheheh. Bastard. I agree, it would be nice to have another realtime
control axis for the filters. Especially since they lack the third
axis of true Z-plane filters. Even if it sounds funky, sometimes that
can be useful in unexpected ways.

If the synthesis engine can be tweaked, it'd be nice to get a sample-
reverse option, even if it used two or four voices of polyphony.
That's probably a lot to ask, though.

Yeah, we had prototyped a way to do realtime resonance cheaply, but it
had some zipper-noise artifacts. Even worse though, it also introduced
several serious hard to track down bugs. This is something I will
probably not be able to fix.

Is this the same code that was used in EOS4.7?

Same idea, different implementation. The XL-7 has 12th order filters
with dynamic allocation, the E4 does not.

that's the way my mouse is connected to my computer.
over the usb port in my keyboard. microsoft trackball
mouse, microsoft ergonomic keyboard, apple computer.
it works fine ;o)

but i know what you mean.

Touch\ufffd. =) I suppose the better example would be plugging your USB
keyboard into your USB hard drive and expecting to be able to edit text
files...  =)
