how to pattern select with external sequencer

how to pattern select with external sequencer

hello all . ..how does one go about selecting patterns on the emu
with say cakewalk. The inst def files enables one to select the
different banks of sounds but not the pattern itself ?? or am i
mistaken here ?? thanks ..

I don´t know cakewalk but it is posible with *program changes*.
I only use Cubase to tweek my individual patterns so I can´t give you
too many tips on this.I do all sequencing in my xx7. I´m sure someone
else can elaberate on this but >program change< is where its at!

i dont think its possibly ..well at least eaisly. midi chart says
ther is no midi info for song select ..that reallys sucks if its
so ..well not really ..i guess most people use the xl as a main
sequencer ??

 Not possible. Tragic flaw.
  -m@

Holy Cow. Its really not posible. <Phest breaks out in goosepimples>.
Thats mad.
Yep - program change is track specific and changes instruments.Bit of
a "faux pas" all round.
However:
As I said, I do all my master sequencing from my xx7 (after all
stringing patterns together is not too difficult). The obvious work
around is to program the pattern strings you want into a song in your
xx7 and have your it set to accept external song start stop. Then,
where your program change would be in cakewalk is simply in the xx7 at
the same song location!
I did some research in the archives and found very little on this
"flaw". Its not even high on the list for the much documented OS
update.
Please correct me if I wrong, because yahoo seemed to have changed the
way it does *search archive* which makes it a bit of a drag to dig
deep in the archives.

through the use of front panel sysex commands.

see pp. 36-39 of the (modern) Proteus Family SysEx
document.

simply sequence the bytes necessary that would mimic
what you would do on the front panel.

cheers,

Having done remote control sysex programming, I do believe this is
possible. I believe I posted some tips on how to do remote control
sysex programming.

(1) open remote control session
(2) mimic front panel control (although not all buttons are available
from what I've seen).
TIP: You may be in any of several operating modes, so initialize
your virtual front panel to a known state.
TIP: When simulating the master knob, initialize the knob to a known
state--either all the way left (counter-clockwise) or all the way
right (clockwise).
(3) close remote control session

Hope this helps.

I agree with Matt on this one. Having pattern selection accessible
via bank selection/program change combo would be extremely handy.

I have a Roland Intelligent arranger where the different styles are
selectable via bank selection/program change. It is so easy to use
via a software sequencer--just point, click, scroll, etc. No sysex
programming needed.

Not having this capability to select E-Mu patterns is to me a major
flaw.

Add that to the OS wish list.

This was a reply to one of Matt's questions trying to do the same
thing (switching presets). I am not sure if Matt tried this approach.

Hope this helps.
Dr. Steve.
