Thanks, but I'm dead set against using any Hosa products, they've always
failed on me at the worst times. But, at elast I know it's a standard TRS
snake, so it should be easy to find another manufacturer that makes these.
Thanks guys for all the replies!

HOSA makes 8<-->4 TRS snakes [send/return cables]. At the Guitar
Center near me they were slightly cheaper than 4 individual cables.
There are pluses and minuses to each. One factor is where your gear
is located.

I haven't tried this yet so I may be climbing out on a limb here...

The Sub outs are not only outputs, they are send/receive jacks. You can either use them as
regular outputs with normal 1/4" TS cables, or as send/receive jacks with 1/4" TRS cables. The
latter usage routes the Sub Outs to external gear for processing and then returns it back to the
main outputs. The theory behind this is that the signal is sent out via the Tip and returns on
the Ring. The Sleeve is used as ground. If you want to just input a signal from outside the XX-7
and have it appear at the main output jacks, traditionally this is done by taking regular 1/4"
cables and inserting them only halfway into the Sub Out jacks (up to the first click). This
connects the Sleeve of the cable with the Sleeve of the jack and the Tip of the cable with the
Ring part of the jack, effectively using the Sub Outs as a mixer input with no control over gain.
This must be done at the output of the external device.

I don't know if the XX-7 works in this same way, from the looks of it and perusing the manual
it appears as though it does. Aaron? Anyone else? If this is all true, then all the talk about
insert cables doesn't apply to overcoming this particular problem, only for routing signals from
the sub outs to external gear and then bringing it back in.

Friends don't let friends use Hosa cables...

                 Stephen

Ah. So Sub1 AND Sub2 can be used as inputs if TRS cables are used.
It is not possible to control the levels from the XX-7?

And does this mean that if you have input TRS cables routing external
devices thru the XX-7 sub1/2 that any tracks sent to send2/3 aren't
heard at the main outputs?

What does TRS stand for?

This is exciting...I could eliminate an external mixer from my live
setup. But if I can only have two different effects sends it might
not be worth it.

Or if you just plug the cable in till the first click. (though they
tend to fall out)

No, it is simply an impedance matched sum.

If you use a send return cable, yes, the *dry signal only* will be
removed from the mains. The wet sound will still be heard unless you
turn down the send to the FX as well. I think the "first click trick"
leaves the signal intact.

Tip Ring Sleeve.

Yeah, it's generally not worth it. You'll either lose the returns or
have a cable half hanging out waiting to become disconnected at the
slightest nudge.
