Ordered an MP7, seeking suggestions on X-Lead vs Vintage Collection ROMS

2004-04-11 by paolovalladolid

Hi all,

I recently ordered an MP-7 and a World Expedition ROM. Now I'm
looking to pick up the gig bag for it from Emu. I figure while I get
the gig bag, I might as well get a ROM on sale too.

I'm interested primarily in electronic sounds, but would also be open
to suggestions for ROMs with good ethnic instrument sounds, in case
something goes wrong with the order for the World ROM (you know how it
is - something appears to be available on the website, but that same
item really isn't for some reason). I've read good things about both
the X-Lead and the Vintage Collection ROMS. How much
overlap/duplication between these ROMs? How much overlap/duplication
of sounds between either of these and the MP7 sounds (I'm guessing the
Pure Phatt ROM)?

Thanks,
Paolo

Hi,

I know you!
Search posts by Aeon on the subject, both here and back at HC. Also,
the "protean drums" rom is really good(despite the horrid demos at the
EMU site), with NO overlap with other roms. There are some world
sounds too if your ROM purchase falls through. Might be worth
considering.

To sum up Aeons comments on the difference between the XL and Vintage
Roms:

XL=DCO sound
Vintage=VCO sound

What other gear do you have? That may help determine what ROMS make
the most sense for you. Heck man, I am excited for you.

are in very short supply right now. If they do though, please let us know
where you got it from, as some people on here are trying to find them as
well.<<<

>>>Probably not that much at all. The X-Lead is more digital sounding
synths, and bunch of drum sounds too. The Vintage goes after the more
analog sounding synths, and has less drums from what I hear. <<<

How much overlap/duplication of sounds between either of these and the MP7

>>>The X-Lead will definitely have the most overlap with the MP-7, they
share quite a few of the same sounds. YOu can always download the manual
for the XL-7 and the MP-7 and compare the "instrument" listing in the
appendices for a more accurate view of the similarities. <<<

Hey there! Thanks for sending me to this group, btw.

The Yahoo Groups search feature is flaky - it won't return anything
posted before 2004. I did however find Aeon's posts on HC, which are
very high on the Vintage Collection ROM. The X-Lead gets good marks
too, though "not by itself". I saw that his top picks for synth-
oriented sounds are the Vintage Collection, X-Lead, and Techno Synth
Construction Yard (which suffers the same problem as the World).

My choice of the MP7 was dictated by availability at that price. As
you may recall, I almost got a PX7, but the other fella managed to
get his order on that unit fully processed before my own order was
completed by the system. I fear a similar thing will happen with my
World ROM order - in that the store's system happily accepted my
order without real knowledge of whether the product is actually in
stock or not.

Me too! :) The other gear:

Nord Micromodular - Also on order, from Nova Musik
Apple 700Mhz G3 iBook - Software of note - Numerology, FM7, Max/MSP
Electro-Harmonix EH16 Reissue (of the classic looper/delay) - Have
preorder deposit - won't be out until July

My interests are in glitch/D'n'B, ethnic-flavored electronica, and
experimental/noise. Points of reference include Squarepusher, Tabla
Beat Science (the Zakir Hussain/Bill Laswell project), Robert Rich,
and Autechre. I'm not interested in sounding exactly like these
people, but hopefully this gives an idea of the kind of sounds I'm
looking for. So far, looks like the Vintage Collection ROM is a
must. As for the remaining 2 slots, I still hope to fill one with
the World. Other ROM candidates look to be the Protean Drums and X-
Lead V2. I was initially interested in the Beat Garden, but it
doesn't have many fans.

The store I found that lists the World ROM for sale is
Instrumentpro.com. Warning: Their ROMs are generally overpriced.
Here's the URL to their Emu ROM page: http://tinyurl.com/2zgkh. I
placed the order Thursday afternoon and have yet to receive a "your
order has been shipped" email. I called them Friday and confirmed
they still have my order in the system. They say it takes a day for
the order to process. We'll see...

Unfortunately, emu.com only has the XL7 manual. Based on aeon's
posts, the X-Lead V2 ROM might be worth adding to my MP7 anyway.

Add a Nord Modular G2 to the mix, after learning some new things
about it (they will be adding a DXRouter module that will in essence
emulate a Yamaha DX7 - the editor may even be able to read DX7 SysEx
files - microtuning is also in the works).

Which probably means to I should get the Proteus Drums ROM.

I agree with this assesment. Maybe some others here can share their
opinions, but I suspect the Protean Drums is one of the best "all
arounder" ROMS out there. Especially cool is the fact that you will
be able to run beats you create through you Micromod as an effect. I
often will keep my snares clean, and then send the kick out another
output and mangle it through the Evolver. Really, though if you are a
tweaker at heart (and I suspect you are), you will end up treating the
sounds as raw waveforms and then using the Command stations
comprehensive synth engine to create sounds of your own. I do belive
the Vintage Rom offers the most capability for users with this midset,
however. Bu,t with a couple nord modulars and the MP rom, real
instrument sounds may be most usefull for you.

The search feature works by searching blocks of messages at a time,
not the entire message database. So when you get the following
message:

------No matches found in the messages searched.
------Click "Next" to search more messages.

you need to click Next to search the next (chronologically prior) set
of messages.

It is a pain to use, but I think I understand Yahoo's reason for
limiting the search to a range of messages rather than the whole data
base.

You may see the "No matches found" message 20, 30, 40, 50 or more
times if the topic has not been discussed in a while. But it does
find matches prior to 2004. (At least on my computer it just did.)

I think you are right. :) I'm definitely an improvisor at heart too
and like messing around with sound in real-time.

My choices of expansion ROMs for the MP-7:

World Expedition
Vintage Collection
Protean Drums

My thanks to you and everyone else who responded.
