Vintage is so well done there'd be no comparison. The Ensoniq is packed
full of waste.

retbah,

Your English is far better than my French and I understood you, so I
will try to help:

I had the Ensoniq Project ROM (contains "World" and "Urban" sounds),
but I found it to be mostly "merde". This sound-set is old and
dated, and to my ears, not very musical. Many of the presets sound
the same--stale and boring.

On the other hand, the World Expedition ROM sounds fantastic and has
many great, usable sounds, especially the hand percussion. It does
have some poor sounds too. Many of the wind and bowed string
instruments are fairly awful and not very usable.

As for as the "urban" sounds compared to the Pure Phatt ROM...I don't
think I'm qualified to comment on them; I don't make music in that
genre, and I thought they were both pretty mediocre sounding
(uninspiring). If it is between these two, I would go with the Pure
Phatt because the sound-set is 'fresher'.

Although this topic has been covered many times, I would say this
about the various ROMs:

- "Ensoniq Project" is NOT worthwhile.
- "World Expedition" has fantastic hand drums and percussion.
- "Vintage Collection" is packed full of excellent usable sounds.

In my opinion, the Vintage Collection may just be the BEST single ROM
that E-mu ever made for their synths. It is rich, diverse and
musical. One of the great things about it is that it doesn't sound
like any of the other ROMs. In other words: very little overlap in
the sound-set.

At one time or another, I have owned almost every ROM that ever came
out for the Proteus synths. I have sold many of them. Here are the
ones I still have because I liked them the best:

- Pop Collection
- World Expedition
- Protean Drums
- Vintage Collection

Hope this helps

Andy

I pretty much agree. I love the ethnic percussion sounds! I was
looking primarily for gamelan but was also very pleased with the
others. I had the same reaction to the wind/bowed string presets,
though I haven't had the chance yet to listen to the raw samples and
see if there's anything salvageable from that category. Overall,
though, it's been worth every penny! A+!

Definitely gets an A+ in my book as well.

Other ROMS in my XL-7:

X-Lead V2 - Collection of 90s and later synth sounds and other
techno/IDM type sounds that complements my Vintage Collection synth
samples really well.

Protean Drums - Noticeable improvement in acoustic drum sample
quality over the drum samples in the other ROMs (except the ethnic
drums of the World ROM - those are in a class by themselves). I look
forward to putting together sequences that "alternate" between more
electronic drum sounds and these drum sounds - its an idea I got from
listening to drum-and-bass.
