Saving Patchs w/ Patterns

Saving Patchs w/ Patterns

2004-08-24 by fusioncm2000

Hey guys, newbie question here. I have been creating my own patterns
and saving them with the xl7. I have been having a problem though
when I turn off the xl7. When I turn it back on, all of the patches
that I have set up for the individual tracks for my pattersn are
changed to some default set up. I have tried several times recording
and saving the patches that I want to the patterns that I have
created. What is the correct way to save these patches to patterns? I
have tried to research this issue in the manual and there is no clear
cut decription of how to deal with this issue. Thanks again for any
help.

Patterns and Presets are completely seperate entities. You have to save
any Patterns you create to the User Pattern locations, and the same goes
for any Presets you create. The Pattern doesn't actaully save the Preset
data, it just saves the location of the preset that was used in the
Pattern.

For instance, say you have a Pattern where you're using a custom bass
sound you made on Track 1. The preset parameters you change to make that
bass sound aren't stored in the pattern, they are stored in the Preset
itself. So you would need to save that Preset to a User location such
User Bank 0, Preset number 004 (0:004). The Pattern has no idea that
there is a bass sound on track 1, it only knows that it needs to play
whatever preset is stored at 0:004.
So, whenever you make a new Preset, be sure to save that, and THEN save
the Pattern again too.

Erik's right. Another thing to note if it's not remembering *which*
preset a track uses (not just the changes you made to a preset) is that
you have to have something on a track for it to save vol, pan, preset,
etc.

That being said, here's a trick for all you folks who want to tweak
custom presets without saving them to a new location. If your edits
are just via the quick edit knobs, just record them at tick 0 in the
step editor. For example, if you like a pad, but it needs to have a
little bit shorter attack, simply enter step edit mode, tweak knob E
till it sounds right, then save the pattern. Know, when you play that
pattern, MIDI E will get played once at the first loop before any
notes, and your preset will have the longer attack.

How long does one have to wait before releasing an "unsupported" OS for
a discontinued product like this, Aaron? What if we take a collection to
make it more worth your while?

Thanks for all the info guys.

P.S. OS 2.5 sounds like a great idea. :)

Thanks for the tip. (Great example!!! :-)

I seem to recall reading a trick to access tick 0, but I don't recall
what it is. Any suggestions?

I just reread it and realized that I said you'd get a longer attack
when you wanted a shorter attack... =)

To access tick 0 with the step editor (record button 3 times) you don't
have to do anything special. To access it in the list editor, you can
set the track to external, but you can only edit stuff at tick 0, you
can't add. PS, inserting stuff at tick 1 works as well (i.e. only the
first loop through will it play).

And as far as a 2.5 is concerned, I do have the rights, but
unfortunately, not the time. Maybe someday when I become independently
wealthy and I don't have to work, I'll have time...
