It is totally normal for a unit to occasionally do a compaction on
the
User Data. As others have speculated, it is mainly for resolving
Flash
library fragmentation. It is only done when absolutely needed, mostly
because it requires the system be 'offline' for a short period of
time
to do it - and you don't want that to happen every time you save a
preset. The frequency that compaction occurs is dependent on how much
editing of User Data you do, and therefore some people will see it
more
often than others.
A backup of the User Data is made in case the system is powered down
during the compaction, in which case the unit will revert to the
backup
and do the compaction again at a more appropriate time.
That being said, all of this has nothing to do with CPU RAM and the
issues resolved by the 1.21 release. That change was done so that the
CPU RAM could load Sound SIMMs that have large amounts of Factory
Data.
Since Demos are only needed when you want to play them and are not
needed during 'normal' operation, they are now only loaded when
needed,
freeing up space for the stuff you want in there all the time (like
Instruments, Presets, Arps, Riffs etc)
