Other drum machines with Grid Mode

Other drum machines with Grid Mode

2005-02-17 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I'm perfectly happy with my XL-7's synth capabilities, but I wish I
had more drum sounds. I've got the XL-7 ROM, the Pure Phatt ROM, and
the Protean Drums ROM, but dammit - I just want more! There can
never be enough great sounding drums for me. So that brings me to my
question: I'm looking for other hardware drum machines with the
following features:

- Grid recording mode
- Realistic drum sounds (a la the Protean Drums ROM).
- Ethnic percussion sounds - if possible

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Fab

Grid record mode is an option on the XX-7's with the latest OS. What
OS do you have?

I have 2.0 - but even the earlier versions have grid mode. That's
what I love about the XL-7. That's why I want another drum machine
with this feature. I've gotten so used to working with grid mode
that it's become a necessity. I'm not looking to get rid of my XL-7 -
I just want to have as many great drum machines as possible.

I must have misunderstood the complete question. Yes Grid mode was
introduced I believe in OS # 1.3X
Try this link and do a search for the other features with different
vendors.

Grid mode has been in there since the beginning. As for the original
question, I'd suggest either (or both):

1 - find the World ROM. It has *tons* of fantastic drum sounds.
2 - buy a cheap sampler and connect it to the XL-7.

For the sampler, any really simple thing will do. There are plenty
very cheap hardware samplers that will do the trick.

Was Grid Mode Record around in the beginning as well? That's what I
meant. Is Dan B. still around? I haven't talked to him in awhile.

Thanks Aaron,
1) If I could find the World ROM (and was able to get a small loan
to afford it), then I'd get it for sure! :)
2) Great idea. I already have a cheap sampler - the SP-505. I
haven't been able to find any great samples, really. Is there a
website where I can download and/or purchase some great ethnic
percussion samples? I'd be eternally grateful if you knew where to
look.
Thanks,
Fab

Ive got a load of ethnic akai samples that i transfered into wavs..
Think those disks at the time were only £1.25 each!
I see the EMU world CD roms on ebay. If you knew someone with an EMU
sampler or could transfer them into wav's (or what you need) for you
that could be another way. Chicken sys "translator" might well be
able to do it?
Also when a friend sold his Yamaha A5000 we copied all the CD roms
sample disks that came with it. Now of course we cant read them
without a yamaha sampler but if you open up the disk contents as raw
sample data you will be very suprised at what you might get ;o)

Just an idea :o)

Ethnic percussion\drum sounds

2005-02-22 by dclowerstx

For any of you searching in vain for the World Expedition ROM, (no I
won't sell mine) just a heads up: If you have a Soundblaster card or
any softsynth capable of using soundfonts, go to www.soundfont.com and
buy the Old World Instruments soundfont. It's a 32MB soundfont and
has almost all (if not all) of the drum samples from the World
Expedition ROM. Turns your computer into a Planet Earth module.

Try the Beat Garden ROM and the Planet Earth ROM, these are great more drum sounds.

If you want synthetic drum sounds word on the street is the Elektron Machinedrum is the
way to go... don't know I don't own one but I've got a Monomachine on order. I hear the
interfaces rule. I can't say if either are similar to the XL-7's grid mode... as I've never even
used the grid mode. I'm not sure why but I've just always found the XL-7 lent itself to
realtime recording. Probably just the way I learned from my first sequencer, an Ensoniq
TS-10. I blew right by it in the manual. I think I once tried grid mode but found it to be
retarded compared to other grid based machines like Rolands or Korgs.

BTW, I find the Korg ESX-1 to be a great little machine for not too much money and
because it's a sampler you can put anything you damn want in it. The last show I did used
30% insect sounds for percussion.
