Is there any way to set loop points for individual tracks or can this only be done for the entire pattern? I'd like the patern to continue while one or two tracks loop over a bar or so. I've searched the manual. It's tough to know when to give up looking for a feature in a manual that large, when you don't even know if the feature exists.

I'll be interested in any informed answers ... but as a general principle I think this is impossible. There is only one 'sequencer' running at a certain speed for a certain length of time. Certainly any section of the entire sequence can be looped. But I can't conceive how a subsection could be looped while the rest of the band, i.e., sequencer 'plays on.' There are VSTi midi devices like 'Loopazoid' that sequencers that permit mixing of audio and midi data on a single track can host. The 'Loopazoid' instrument will do what you describe. Actually there IS a way to this with the XX-7s. What you do is, use the arps and latched triggers. User arp patterns can be any length you like, you can even edit them while they are playing for some Genoqs type action. Make your arp patterns, assign them to presets on the relevant channels and set up latched triggers (in the Controllers section) to start / stop them. It's actually one of the first things mentioned in the manual IIRC. The "Extend Track To" feature was the cop-out for not having separate loop points. Try doing the following: 1 - set the pattern loop to the duration of your track 2 - choose "extend to" and select the duration of the full pattern and pick the track(s) you want longer note that you can even do this while playing. I work like this: I start out with a 1 or 2 bar pattern and lay down a beat. Once I'm done filling in the 1 or 2 bars with basic groove, I'll extend those tracks to 4 or 8 (all while continuing playing) and then punch back in to record the longer stuff (like chord progressions, melodies, etc). Then, if I want to change the 1-2 bar parts, I'll turn the loop range down to 1-2 bars again, tweak the part, then extend just that part back to 4-8. Sometimes I'll even start at the 4-8 bar pattern (if what I'm hearing in my head is more melodic or chordal in nature), tracking the longer stuff first, then cut the range back, fill in the beat, then extend just the drum tracks back to the original duration. Once you get used to that kind of workflow, it's actually pretty quick. -Aaron
